NEW ONLINE ARTICLES
www.craftyear2007.ca
The Canadian Crafts Federation/Fédération canadienne des métiers d’art has produced a new, online library of articles on Canadian, contemporary fine craft. Nine articles focused on varying aspects of contemporary practice were commissioned from professional craft authors based all across the country. These articles were inspired by, and celebrate, the success of the CCF/FCMA’s Craft Year 2007 project, a festival which celebrates the amazing level of craft practice in Canada with over 675 events across the country (and counting). Covering everything from specific craft year events, discussions of contemporary practice, and personal reflection on the state of Canadian fine craft, these articles add to the ever-growing literary discussions of contemporary craft.
This project was made possible through funding from the Canada Council for the Arts’ Jean A. Chalmers Fund for the Crafts.

A Closer Look at Supplementary Estimates A - Federal Fiscal Watch
Just the Facts
As reported by the CCA , the federal government has tabled Supplementary Estimates A announcing a total of $13.6 billion work of supplementary expenditures of which $8 billion were voted appropriations i.e. discretionary spending programs) and $5.5 billion were changes to statutory budget spending ( transfer payments, employment insurance, pensions etc.)
The Supplementary Estimates A allow us to have a closer look at the details of the Main Estimates and how announcements in the 2007 federal budget are being implemented. The Main Estimates were tabled before the federal budget, therefore the Supplementary Estimates A add another layer of detail to the picture of actual federal spending.
It is important to note that these figures do not include details regarding the billion dollar reallocation program underway within government which seeks to move money from lower priority areas to higher ones within the federal government. As previously reported , the Department of Canadian Heritage and several Canadian Heritage Portfolio Agencies are on the list of departments and agencies targeted in this year’s exercise.
For more details, the CCA has developed a four page Analysis of the Supplementary Estimates 2007-08 A.
What does this mean?
Of particular interest to those of us in the arts and culture sector are transactions that affect the Department of Canadian Heritage and its Portfolio Agencies such as the CBC, the Canada Council for the Arts, the National Museums, the National Arts Centre, etc. The CCA notes for the first time to our knowledge, the government has utilized the Supplementary Estimates to provide spending directly to specific projects – ordinarily the Supplementary Estimates provide new appropriations to general programs as opposed to specific projects.

Several Measures Proposed at the CCA Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy
The Facts
On November 22nd, at Université du Québec à Montréal, the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA) held a one one-day Symposium on the Role of Arts and Culture in Canadian Public Diplomacy. One hundred and twenty (120) people working within the artistic and cultural sector gathered, to hear the twelve invited panelists’ thoughts. Participants discussed the principles and models on which the federal government bases its actions pertaining to the integration of the artistic and cultural sector into public diplomacy strategies. Several proposed measures for the CCA were put forward in an attempt to redefine the role of the cultural sector in public diplomacy while seeking to alter other countries’ perception of Canada... .
During this enriching day of discussions and recommendations, the CCA determined the following requirements:
• The need for more dialogue between the cultural and the political sectors about the role of the arts and culture in our society and in our foreign policies
• The need for more coherence between all involved in public diplomacy
• The importance of maintaining and fostering the development of networks already in place
• The relevance of seizing international partnership opportunities
• The urgency of integrating new technologies in all future cultural diplomacy approaches... .
Please share with us any element which you feel should be considered when this group gathers, by contacting Guillaume Sirois, Cultural Advisor to the CCA at guillaume.sirois@ccarts.ca, or by calling (613) 238.3561, ext. 19.

Charley Farrero along with nine other Canadians, worked as artists-in-residence at the Pottery Art Village in Fuping (Shaanxi province) for the month of October, 2007. The resulting works now form the basis for the permanent exhibition at the Canadian Museum of Ceramics (FLICAM) in Fuping. The museum is already built and, unveiled on Nov 6, 2007 open to public and already housing the works of 10 canadian ceramists. If you had gone or go to www.ceram.ca and the canadian page you can see some of the works already housed there and photos of the unveiling. Please note: The museum in Fuping 80km NE of Xian, 1200 km SW of Beijing, has nothing to do with 2008 olympics.
