NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES
Which way for Waterfront?
The comparison between the success of Bazzart in Regina and Waterfront in Saskatoon has always been, well, frustrating. Last summer, we attempted something new in conjunction with the Mendel and the Saskatchewan Environmental Society. Waterfront was rebranded as Living Artfully on the Waterfront, and expanded to include stage entertainment and environmental information. The weather was bad, making a proper evaluation of the results impossible. However, we can say that sales for exhibitors did not go up. From a promotional point of view, the advantages of the larger event were offset by the resulting loss of focus in presenting the event.
For 2008, we are planning more fundamental changes. These changes will be:
- Returning the event to a Craft sale focus – back to the basics.
- Changing the date to June.
- Relocating the event from the Mendel to River Landing to obtain higher visibility and traffic.
Saturdays in June are the 7th, the 14th, the 21st, and the 28th. Of these, the 21st is ruled out because of the conflict with Bazzart.
The 7th: Advantages – two weeks separation from Bazzart – will be in advance of most June weddings. Disadvantage – there is a significant increase in the weather risk. The average temperature is 3 degrees colder than a week later. More seriously, three of the last ten June 7ths have had an average temperature of less than 10 degrees and it rained on four of them. A week later – only 1 in 10 was below 10 degrees and it rained twice.
The 14th: Advantage – reduced weather risk.
The 28th: Advantage – reduced weather risk, concurrent with the Jazz Festival (cross-promotion possible, more people downtown). Disadvantage – miss most June weddings, runs into July 1 long weekend.
Another option is to abandon Saturday, and go from 1 to 9pm on Wednesday, June 25th. This would put us in the middle of the Jazz Festival with its promotional opportunities and traffic, but... .
We’ll need to come to a conclusion soon. If you’ve got any thoughts, suggestions or opinions, please call Chris at 653.3616 ext. 24 or Mark at 653.3616 ext. 27.
