Welcome New SCC Members
Congratulations and warm welcome to returning and new members;

Governments and Cultural Funding
In the past two weeks, the provincial and federal governments made important announcements on cultural policy.

The provincial government announced a consultation process seeking advice as to what they could do to build support for Saskatchewan cultural producers and industries. They are seeking your view – please go to the on-line report and survey at:
www.tpcs.gov.sk.ca/Reflections-Cultural-Policy It’s important that the provincial government hears the views of all Craft producers and patrons in the province – please take a few minutes to share your thoughts.

The news from the federal government is less encouraging. The government has terminated two programs that provided funding to help with cultural exports. The Department of Foreign Affairs killed the PromArt program and Canadian Heritage killed the Trade Routes Program. In the past, we’ve received funding from Trade Routes for the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show Project. We had been looking to both programs for Canadian participation in the Cheongju (Korea) exposition in 2009. With the loss of these programs, Canada now has no national program devoted to encouraging cultural exports. Please feel free to contact your local MP to talk about this.

Olympic Games Artist Registry
The organizing committee for the 2010 Olympics has established a registry for artists across Canada. They will be using this registry as a data-base as they require art and other cultural products for the Vancouver Olympics and the associated Cultural Olympiad. You can register yourself with the Olympic committee by going to www.vancouver2010.com/en/CulturalEducation/CulturalOlympiad/ArtistRegistry/Guidelines

Fine Craft Auction
We will be doing a Fine Craft Auction again this winter in Saskatoon. We will be holding the Auction on Wednesday, October 15. Like last year, this will be an artist friendly auction held in partnership with the St. Paul’s Hospital Healing Arts Program. The detailed call for submissions will go out at the end of August, and ticket sales will be launched at the beginning of September. In the meantime, circle October 15 on your social calendar and begin to think about what piece of great Craft you would like to sell at this auction.

Wintergreen Publicity
Work is now underway on the tabloid newspaper to promote Wintergreen. Dorothy Fitzer will be selling ads for this publication. If you have any suggestions as to businesses that might like to purchase an ad, or if you want to purchase one yourself, give her a call at 586.5688 or email at dotto@accesscomm.ca.

Our summer employee, Jessica, is working on artist profiles. We will begin with people who are first time exhibitors – but will also be doing some articles on seasoned arts who are doing work that is new and different. Drop Jessica a line if you will be at Wintergreen with something new. Her e-mail is scc.summer@sasktel.net.

EXPO 2009
EXPO 2009 has been scheduled for April 2009 in Saskatoon. In addition to the invitational-only evening event, the EXPO displays will be open to the public on a paid admission basis for a second day. This will allow people who did not get an invitation to the evening event to attend and view the Craft. It will also provide a second day of sales opportunity.

In accordance with the resolution passed at the Annual General Meeting, we will be developing and circulating the selection criteria and process over the summer. However, we would like to be in a position to select the participating artists by mid-September. Therefore, if you wish to be considered for EXPO 2009, please let Chris know at scc.memberservices@sasktel.net. We’ll be providing more information in the weeks ahead, but want you to start thinking about EXPO as soon as possible.

Online Auction
The current auction piece was crafted by Binh Pho and the late Frank Sudol. This piece will close today at 5pm. This Monday, August 18, a set of handdipped, beeswax candles, made by Jude Marshall and Rowill be auctioned until August 29 at 5pm. This auction will be ongoing and funds raised will go towards improvements of the SCC building facade -- matching a City of Saskatoon grant. You can view the auction piece on the SCC website home page www.saskcraftcouncil.org or in the SCC Gallery. If you have any inquiries or would be interested in donating your work, please contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or scc.editor@sasktel.net. The SCC would like to thank those of you who contacted the SCC with your generous donations. The response has been fantastic!

Announcing the theme for DIMENSIONS in 2009
Playing with Dimensions
Let’s see what you can do with “playing”, “playing with…”, “dimensions”, “playing with dimensions”, “playing with Dimensions”. Play around with ideas and stuff. Create and make things. Have fun, make fun. Send us your best in early April 2009.

Dimensions is our annual juried craft exhibition open to all Saskatchewan residents. This is the second notice of the theme for 2009 – to SCC members. Please pass this information along to your friends who aren’t lucky enough to belong to the SCC. The more entries, the better. Details for entering work to “Playing with Dimensions” will be available in December 2008. For information contact Leslie or Judy at 866.653.3616 ext. 25 or scc.exhibitions@saskatel.net

Three-Dimensional Fibre Exhibition at the SCC Gallery, May 1 – 31, 2009
The Saskatoon Quilters’ Guild will be hosting a Canadian quilting conference, May 27 – 30, 2009. And the SCC Gallery wants to showcase Saskatchewan talent for this national gathering of fibre enthusiasts.

This is an advance notice to SCC fibre artists (and all their fibre friends). While you have some summer leisure, let your mind wander to ideas of what you can create in fibre and in three dimensions. Wall hangings, quilted works, clothing, fibre sculpture – as long as it’s fibre and more than 2-dimensional. Parts of Saskatchewan might be flat, but our fibre art is not!

The exhibition will be curated from actual works, not images. Selections will be made by members of the SCC staff and the Curatorial Committee. Details will be out in Fall 2008 – entry forms and requirements, deadlines, curator(s) names, exhibition title, etc.
Questions? Suggestions for a show title? Contact Judy Haraldson at 866.653.3616 ext. 25 or scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net.

Bluenose Bash, September 12
The Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon will be holding a “Bluenose Bash” on Friday, Sept 12. Tickets are $100 and in limited supply. This is fundraising supper featuring lobster flown in from Canada's east coast.

As part of this event, they would like to hold a Craft silent auction. This will be artist friendly, with 50% of the sales proceeds being returned to the participating maker. A reserve bid will be employed to ensure an adequate sales price.

The group is looking for about 10 pieces that are appropriate for a sales price of between $100 and $300. Selection of the work will be made by the Broadway Theatre Bluenose Bash organizing committee.

If you want to be considered for this opportunity, please e-mail Mark Stobbe at scc.director@sasktel.net with a brief description of what you wish to put forward. A picture, if available, would be useful. I will pass on all submissions to the Broadway Theatre group. The deadline for expressions of interest is noon, August 29.

CANADIAN CULTURE AT RISK

The future of Canada’s international reputation is at stake.
Since taking power in 2006, the Conservative Government has chosen to eliminate over $34 Million
from Cultural and Heritage Granting Programs. The programs affected were designed to assist
artists, arts institutions and not for profit charitable organizations in the creation, development,
promotion and dissemination of Canadian art both nationally and internationally. Please see the full article in PDF.
