NAME THE MARKET CONTEST
The SCC will be launching two new markets in 2009: May 9/10 in Moose Jaw and September 12/13 in Lloydminster. We are looking for great names for these markets – if you can help us out, please send your ideas (ASAP) to scc.memberservices@sasktel.net. The prize is acknowledgement of your brilliance in the e-News and the knowledge that your idea will live forever.
SCC CALL FOR ENTRY
“Flatland Fibre – Off the Wall” will be a SCC Gallery exhibition showcasing three-dimensional fibre works by Saskatchewan fibre artists. We want to show off our fabulous fibre arts during Quilt Saskatchewan 2009 when the Saskatoon Quilters Guild hosts a national quilting conference – The Canadian Quilters’ Association Alternate Year Event, May 27 – 30, 2009. Let’s see 3-dimensional fibre works in all sorts of techniques - quilts, wall hangings, clothing, sculpture, felting, knitting, weaving, and so on. The sky’s the limit.
SCC Exhibitions & Education Coordinators will curate the exhibition from submitted entries. Leslie Potter is a sculptor and teacher for U of S Certificate of Art and Design; Judy Haraldson is an award winning weaver with a Diploma in Applied Arts – Weaving from SIAST Woodland. Both have extensive experience with many craft mediums and Fine Craft exhibitions.

North South Ripples: Four months ago, this unique piece was birch tree near Big River. Now it’s a work of art of international calibre. Created by a team of craft artists led by Dempsey Bob of British Columbia and Lyonel Grant of New Zealand, this is one of the most exciting pieces ever created at EMMA. Our two expert jurors for Playing With Dimensions are: Mel Bolen, ceramic artist and 2007 Premier’s Prize winner, and Chantal Gilbert, metal artist and 2008 Saidye Bronfman Award winner.
Important Dates
March 4, 2009 – Notify the SCC of your intention to enter.
April 9, 2009 – Deadline for receipt of shipped entries.
April 14, 2009 – Delivery of works. Details sent after receipt of intention to enter.
Dimensions is our annual, juried craft exhibition open to all Saskatchewan residents. Please pass this information along to your friends who aren’t lucky enough to belong to the SCC. The more entries, the better. The call for entry brochure containing details for entering work to “Playing with Dimensions” will be available in Jan 2009.

JOB POSTING: Casual Gallery Assistant Position for the SCC Gallery
The SCC is seeking a casual part time Gallery Assistant to be available to fill in for the SCC Gallery Assistants as needed. Workshop on Building Creativity: Stephen Hogbin, member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA), a wood turner, educator, and author, will be holding a two-day workshop in “Building Creativity”. The workshop is not specific to any medium, and is designed to improve participants approach to creation and design. The workshop will be on February 12 and 13, 2009. Registration fees are $150 for SCC members and students with ID and $200 for non-members. The workshop is sponsored by the SCC, Mendel Art Gallery and the U of S Art & Art History Department. Special Exhibition Opportunity (1): The SCC is partnering with the Land of the Loon Resort at Anglin Lake to create two special exhibitions at a temporary gallery at the resort. The first exhibition will run from the May long weekend, 2009 till the end of June. The second will run from the beginning of July till the end of August. All work in the exhibitions will be for sale, with a 40% commission rate being charged. At each of the two exhibitions, we will be looking for the work of three craft people:
• One person with work suitable for wall hangings,
• One person with small and mid-sized objects (pedestal display), and
• One person with jewellery sized work.

Special Exhibition Opportunity (2): Remember, the submission deadline for the Erotic Craft Exhibition is January 21st. Jurying will be conducted on the basis of photographs. Submit entries to scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net.
Studio Magazine: The SCC is helping Studio Magazine (hitherto to publication of the Ontario Crafts Council) go national! And a subscription will go to all members automatically! Cheongju Call for Entries
Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2009. One of the largest Craft Expositions in the world is held every two years in the South Korean city of Cheongju. Canada will be the guest country in 2009. Attached is the call for entries for the core Canadian exhibition for Cheongju. Also attached is a guide for photographic standards for the entries. See PDF
Travel to Korea: As part of Canada’s involvement with the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea, the Canadian Craft Federation has developed a craft tour package. Circle a week in October 2009 on your calendar and click here to read more information on this exciting holiday package.
Branching Out at the Willow Studio: The Willow Studio in Saskatoon will be holding a group show entitled “Branching Out”. The work can be in any style, medium, or size on the them of “tree.” Up to three submissions per artist will be considered. All work must be for sale, with a commission rate of 40% of the retail price being charged. Jurying will be on the basis of photographs. Clearly mark all pictures for review with your name, address, phone number and e-mail address. To subit, email laura@willowstudio.ca.
