SASKATCHEWAN CRAFT COUNCIL e-News

Vol 2 No 11, May 23, 2008

EMMA Collaboration. The EMMA Collaboration is gearing up to for the week of July 29th to August 4th. This invitational collaboration brings together 100 craft artists in a variety of mediums, including wood, ceramics, fibre, blacksmithing, and glass for a week of fun, learning and collaborative creation in a beautiful and rustic setting near Big River, SK.  We are constructing a “stand-by” list of potential participants in the event that someone now registered for the event is forced to cancel. If you:

  • Are a skilled craft person,
  • Enjoy working with others in a collaborative process (at least some of the time),
  • Want to both learn and share your own knowledge,
  • Like a good time, and
  • Enjoy good times, good food, and good companionship in a semi-wilderness setting, then

EMMA may be something that you’d like to consider. To learn more about EMMA, go to www.saskcraftcouncil.org  and follow the link to EMMA. To be considered for the waiting list, send us an e-mail telling us about yourself to trentw@sasktel.net.

Wanted: Two responsible Craft artists attending EMMA would like to rent a recreational vehicle to take to the EMMA Collaboration from July 28 to August 4. If you have a recreational vehicle to rent, or know of someone who does, please contact Donna at saskcraftcouncil@sasktel.net to provide details and your requested rental rate.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The SCC Annual General Meeting will be held at the SCC Offices (813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) on Sunday, June 22nd at 10 am. The timing is designed to allow all of you who are in Saskatoon to attend Waterfront to stay over and come to the meeting.  We will be making a presentation about Canada’s participation in the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in the fall of 2009 – it’s a great opportunity to get up to speed on this exciting opportunity.

SCC Board Nominations:  There will be three openings on the SCC Board to be filled at the Annual Meeting on June 22nd. If you would like to help directly shape the future of your craft council, please call Ken Wilkinson (244.4973) or Kim Laybourne (280.8755) for more details.

Waterfront: It’ll be big. It’ll be fun. It’ll be profitable (we hope). Sixty-four exhibitors have signed up to participate in Waterfront on June 21. Here’s what’s underway to make this a success at the new River Landing location:

  • The Billboards are going up at three locations in Saskatoon next week.
  • Posters and 10,000 “Free Admission” tickets to Waterfront are being printed.
  • Newspaper and radio advertising has been booked.
  • We’ll be holding a press event to launch our “You Tube” advertisements in the first week of June.
  • We’ve taken the lead in creating a “Midnight Art” event for June 20 – this will provide a way to promote Waterfront.

Midnight Art:  They won’t be rolling up the sidewalks at dusk on June 20. To celebrate the shortest night of the year, Saskatoon Art Galleries will be staying open till midnight. Get out and visit your favourite galleries, or ones that you’ve been meaning to visit.

Summer Student: The SCC has received a grant from the Government of Canada Student Summer Jobs program to hire a student this summer. We are pleased to announce that Jessica Butler will be starting work on Tuesday.  Jessica is a Saskatoon resident who is entering her final year of a BFA in Design Art at Concordia University. You can see her work at www.jessbutler.com. Jessica’s main activities will be to help promote Waterfront Craft Art Festival and the Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival, as well as helping out with EMMA.

EYES ON CRAFT: What’s blue, brown, green, hazel, and sometimes even red? Soon, it will be the front of the SCC Gallery. To help celebrate the Broadway Art Encounter, the SCC will be holding an “EYES ON CRAFT” event on Saturday, June 7. We will be inviting shoppers on Broadway Avenue to paint a pair of eyes on the front of the Craft Council Building. Come on down and help give us an eyeful. The event will run from 10 am till 4 pm.

FACADE IMPROVEMENTS: We’re raising money to renovate and restore the facade of 813 Broadway Avenue. In the meantime, it badly needs painting. This job will be done very soon after the “Eyes on Craft” event.

Upstairs Gallery: In September, the SCC will receive a new neighbour. The Broadway Business Improvement District has leased the third floor of the SCC Building. So....If you’ve always wanted to hold your own exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery, move quickly. There’s only three months left.

Evaluating Dimensions
This year, for the second time in the history of Dimensions, the exhibition had a themed element (“Growth”). As part of this trial process, the SCC Board requested a careful evaluation about how this worked so that informed decisions could be made in the future. Following a consultation process, the Board looked at the following information at its May 10th meeting: See PDF for details.

Kurenda Appreciation Reception: 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon just is not what it used to be. Prairie Pottery is gone. To celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Ron and Rusty, the SCC will be holding a reception at 2 pm on Sunday, June 1 at the SCC Gallery. A scholarship fund for ceramic students at the University of Regina will also be established in the name of the Kurenda’s. You can contribute to this fund by calling Donna at 653.3616 ext. 0 or e-mailing your pledge to saskcraftcouncil@sasktel.net. Or just come to the reception and make a donation.

2nd Call for EMMA 08 Volunteers
The EMMA Collaboration is looking for TWO hard-working, enthusiastic volunteers to assist with the documentation of work produced and loading the truck to take work back to Saskatoon for the auction. We’re looking for people with strong backs, enthusiasm, and a certain amount of “fuss-budget” attention to detail. It would involve spending two or three days in a tent (August 1 to 3rd) at the EMMA site near Big River (meals provided). It’s a great way to get a taste of the EMMA experience. We’re also looking for volunteers for the EMMA Auction on August 4th (at the Western Development Museum). Call 653-3616 ext. 0 and talk to Donna to put your name forward.

Online Auction
Linda Billo generously donated a glass bowl for the SCC online auction. This auction will be ongoing and funds raised will go towards improvements of the SCC building facade -- matching a City of Saskatoon grant. You can view the auction piece on the SCC website home page. www.saskcraftcouncil.org or upclose and personal in the SCC Gallery. The auction is underway and will close on Friday, May 16, at 5pm. If you have any inquiries or would be interested in donating your work, please contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or scc.editor@sasktel.net

Also underwater is the New Brunswick College of Art and Design. The Craft Association of British Columbia is taking the lead in assessing disaster insurance coverage for craft people and their studios. You can help.
