SCC Annual General Meeting - scheduled Sunday, June 22 in Saskatoon (details to follow)
Opportunities in Korea
We are continuing to learn more about the opportunities that will be available at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in October 2009. For marketing members: in about six weeks we’ll be issuing a formal, detailed request for supply of marketable products for the SCC marketing activity at the Biennale. Here’s what we can tell you so far:
• We will be looking for significant volumes of production items.
• The maximum price point will be around $100 CDN – which means that your maximum wholesale price should be in the range of $50. (Potentially somewhat higher for jewellery).
• We’ll be wanting to have products selected and orders placed by the end of October 2008, with delivery by August 2009.
• Consider shipping and portability. Korea is a long way away, and many of the potential purchasers are travelling.
• Details on payment schedules, etc will follow as we nail down arrangements –but, for now – we understand that consignment arrangements will not work for you on a project of this size and timelines.
Here’s what we are asking you to do right now: Begin to think about what you might want to produce for this market. Again, quantities will be significant. If you want, drop by the SCC offices and look at the catalogue of what was available for sale in Cheongju in 2007. As we nail down more details, we’ll issue the formal request for proposals.
Gift Certificates
We’ve begun marketing the SCC Gift certificates with a Mother’s Day radio ad campaign on C-98.3 in Saskatoon. CBC is also promoting the certificates by giving two away as a part of an on-air Mother’s Day contest. It’s not too late to sign up to participate in this program. For more information, go to the SCC website at www.saskcraftcouncil.org.
Waterfront
Watch for the billboards to go up on May 26th. We’ll be launching our “you-tube” advertising campaign about that time as well.
Volunteers Wanted
The EMMA Collaboration is looking for two hard-working, enthusiastic volunteers to assist with the documentation of work produced and loading the truck to take work back to Saskatoon for the auction. We’re looking for people with strong backs, enthusiasm, and a certain amount of “fuss-budget” attention to detail. It would involve spending two or three days in a tent (August 1 to 3rd) at the EMMA site near Big River (meals provided). It’s a great way to get a taste of the EMMA experience. We’re also looking for volunteers for the EMMA Auction on August 4th (at the Western Development Museum). Call 653-3616 ext. 0 and talk to Donna to put your name forward.
Kurenda Appreciation Party
Saskatoon’s booming real estate market has forced the closure of Prairie Pottery. To thank Ron and Rusty for their year’s of tireless work on behalf of potters across Saskatchewan, the SCC is holding an appreciation reception on Sunday, June 1 at 2pm. (SCC Gallery). See you there.
Summer Employment Opportunity
The SCC has been given a Canada Jobs Program grant to hire a student for 12 weeks this summer. The position will pay $8.79 per hour for a 37.5 hour work week. Applicants must be returning to full time study in the fall. For a job description, call Mark at 653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail scc.director@sasktel.net.
Market Feasibility Study Underway
With the generous assistance of the provincial government (Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport) and the Saskatchewan Arts Board, we are beginning an assessment of the viability of a commercial craft gallery in either Regina or Calgary. Doug Fast and Terry Schwalm have been contracted to conduct the first phase of this study. It will consist of market research to assess the potential sales of such galleries, and an assessment of the supply of craft that could be available for sale in this kind of outlet. Please feel free to call Mark at 653.3616 ext. 27 if you want to discuss what this further.
Online Auction
Linda Billo has generously donated a glass bowl for the SCC online auction. This auction will be ongoing and funds raised will go towards improvements of the SCC building facade -- matching a City of Saskatoon grant. You can view the auction piece on the SCC website home page. www.saskcraftcouncil.org or upclose and personal in the SCC Gallery. The auction is underway and will close on Friday, May 16, at 5pm. If you have any inquiries or would be interested in donating your work, please contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or scc.editor@sasktel.net
