Call for Entry
The SCC will be partnering with the Positive Passions store in Saskatoon to hold an exhibition of Erotic Craft during Valentine’s week, 2009. The exhibition will be held in the meeting rooms at the Positive Passions store. Work should be suggestive of human sexuality – it can be either explicit or suggestive. Let your imagination and your libido be your guide. Work in any medium will be accepted.
Work in the exhibition can be one-of-a-kind, limited edition, or production pieces. Work in the exhibition can be “for sale” with a 40% commission rate being charged. Multiple copies of the same piece can be provided in order to provide replacement exhibition pieces as work is sold.
The exhibition will be juried from photographs of the work. To be considered, please forward an image of your entry to scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net along with the name of piece; Material; Physical dimensions; number of similar pieces that can be provided; Artists statement about the piece (30 words maximum):
All photographs and entry information must be received by Wednesday, January 21st, 2009. Those selected will be notified by Monday, January 26th, 2009. All work must be received by Tuesday, February 3rd.
Wintergreen Report
For the third year in a row, attendance was up at Wintergreen. We have not yet had the chance to crunch numbers, but it appears as if sales were good for most marketers. The promotional approach had the standard mix of billboards, newspaper ads, posters and radio. We continued last year’s initiatives of shopping bag distribution and the tabloid newspaper for hotels and restaurants. New this year was the addition of rural radio (Weyburn) to the advertising campaign and enlisting Olympic gold medalist Jake Wetzel to do the official opening. Suggested for next year is taking a booth in the Cornwall Centre to promote Wintergreen for a few weeks prior to the event.
The co-winners of the “best marketer” award (as chosen by our secret shoppers) were Denyse Klette and Cam Carlson. Congratulations!
An issue for next year is the scheduling of “Our Best to You”. We learned last week that they have scheduled this sale for the same weekend that we have booked for Wintergreen. We’ve started discussions with “Our Best to You” – it appears as if neither of us will be able to change. However, we will be proposing some joint promotional efforts to build attendance for both events (which does not address the problem of double booking for exhibitors). We’ll keep you informed on this.
Christmas Studio Open Houses
If you are doing a Christmas studio open house, please let Gale (scc.editor@sasktel.net or 653.3616 ext. 23) know as soon as possible. We would like to post a directory of these on our website, and, if there are several of them happening, trying to generate some media coverage about them.
Saskatoon Dimensions Opening
The Saskatoon Opening of Dimensions: Growth will be at the SCC Gallery on Friday, Nov 28th from 7 pm to 9 pm. In addition to the opportunity to see the exhibition, the evening will feature:

• The launch of a fun new Dimension's contest;
• Live music, food and wine.
See you all on the 28th!

Jane A. Evans has been awarded an Honorary Diploma by The Cultural Foundation of the World Federation of Free Latvians for her book A Joy Forever, Latvian Weaving; Traditional and Modified Uses (Dos Tejedoras Press, 1991). The award recognizes significant contributions to Latvian cultural heritage. This is the first time it has been made in the Arts and Crafts category. Evans' book is a history and technical guide about handwoven, household fabrics in Latvia prior to WWII. The book, which was aided by grants from the Canada Council, has been well received around the world and has won publishing awards.
Evans, who lives in Saskatoon, SK, and is not a Latvian herself, researched Latvia's weaving history for many years and has taught about the topic across North America. "This pursuit changed my life. Many Latvians have enriched it with friendships. Investigating the textiles vastly increased my weaving knowledge and inspired me to develop completely new applications which have evolved into my own fibre art."
The award was announced internationally on Novr 18, 2008, Latvian Independence Day.
