Cheongju Call for Entries
Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2009. One of the largest Craft Expositions in the world is held every two years in the South Korean city of Cheongju. Canada will be the guest country in 2009. Attached is the call for entries for the core Canadian exhibition for Cheongju. Also attached is a guide for photographic standards for the entries.
The scale and importance of this exhibition is difficult to overstate. In 2007, the Biennale attracted 580,000 visitors from 53 countries. It is a great honour for the Canadian craft community to be invited to participate as the guest country.
Some pieces of the Cheongju exhibition will also be selected to form an exhibition of Canadian Craft at the cultural component of the Vancouver Olympics. This exhibition will be displayed at the Vancouver Museum. As a result, participation in this exhibition offers the opportunity for unprecedented exposure both nationally and internationally. See PDF
Olympic Games Artist Registry
The organizing committee for the 2010 Olympics has established a registry for artists across Canada. They will be using this registry as a data-base as they require art and other cultural products for the Vancouver Olympics and the associated Cultural Olympiad. You can register yourself with the Olympic committee by going to www.vancouver2010.com/en/CulturalEducation/CulturalOlympiad/ArtistRegistry/Guidelines
Fine Craft Auction
We will be doing a Fine Craft Auction again this winter in Saskatoon. We will be holding the Auction on Wednesday, October 15. Like last year, this will be an artist friendly auction held in partnership with the St. Paul’s Hospital Healing Arts Program. Ticket sales will be launched next week. In the meantime, circle October 15 on your social calendar.
Wintergreen Publicity
Work is underway on the tabloid newspaper to promote Wintergreen. Dorothy Fitzer will be selling ads for this publication. If you have any suggestions as to businesses that might like to purchase an ad, or if you want to purchase one yourself, give her a call at 586.5688 or email at dotto@accesscomm.ca.
EXPO 2009
EXPO 2009 has been scheduled for April 2009 in Saskatoon. In addition to the invitational-only evening event, the EXPO displays will be open to the public on a paid admission basis for a second day. This will allow people who did not get an invitation to the evening event to attend and view the Craft. It will also provide a second day of sales opportunity.
In accordance with the resolution passed at the Annual General Meeting, we will be developing and circulating the selection criteria and process over the summer. However, we would like to be in a position to select the participating artists by mid-September. Therefore, if you wish to be considered for EXPO 2009, please let Chris know at scc.memberservices@sasktel.net. We’ll be providing more information in the weeks ahead, but want you to start thinking about EXPO as soon as possible.
Online Auction
The current auction piece was crafted by Don Hefner. The auction will close today at 5pm. This Monday, September 15, a bowl turned by Al Bakke will be auctioned until September 26 at 5pm. This auction will be ongoing and funds raised will go towards improvements of the SCC building facade -- matching a City of Saskatoon grant. You can view the auction piece on the SCC website home page www.saskcraftcouncil.org or in the SCC Gallery. If you have any inquiries or would be interested in donating your work, please contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or scc.editor@sasktel.net. The SCC would like to thank those of you who contacted the SCC with your generous donations. The response has been fantastic!
