Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery – Call for Exhibition Proposals
The SCC Gallery presents up to eight exhibitions annually. Applications are accepted from craftspeople, curators and galleries for solo, two-person and group exhibitions reflecting craft history and current practice. Currently we are booked through to August, 2010 and are looking for exhibitions to consider after that time.
Information on the application process can be obtained from the SCC website at www.saskcraftcouncil.org/resources_applications.php or by contacting Les or Judy at 653-3616 Ext. 25 or email: scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net.
Fine Craft Auction
We will hold the Auction on Wednesday, October 15. Like last winter, this will be an artist friendly auction held in partnership with the St. Paul’s Hospital Healing Arts Program. Tickets are available at the SCC office reception desk and at St. Paul's Hospital cashier's office at 655.5850. In the meantime, circle October 15 on your social calendar.

Planning for Wintergreen is well underway. Publicity will include an enhanced billboard campaign, shopping bags and the tabloid newspaper that was introduced last year. We are also attempting to reach Regina area rural residents with an advertising buy on Weyburn radio.
In an effort to get more media coverage, Wintergreen will be officially opened by Saskatchewan's only gold medal Olympian.
Please note: Chris is currently working on the booth arrangement -- this is your last chance to get in.
EXPO 2009
EXPO 2009 has been scheduled for April 2009 in Saskatoon. In addition to the invitational-only evening event, the EXPO displays will be open to the public on a paid admission basis for a second day. This will allow people who did not get an invitation to the evening event to attend and view the Craft. It will also provide a second day of sales opportunity.
Please note: The fee remains at $400.00. Participants in EXPO will be selected from among SCC members expressing an interest in participating and only those who have asked to be considered will be.
The selections will be based on the committee members’ general knowledge of the work of applicants, along with any photographs of the type of work that will be exhibited. Provision of photographs is particularly important for potential first time participants or for members who have significantly changed the type of work they are doing.
To be considered for EXPO ‘09, please e-mail or notify Chris at scc.memberservices@sasktel.net by Noon, October 1, 2008. Any requests for participation after this deadline will not be considered.
Online Auction
The current auction piece (wooden bowl) was crafted by Al Bakke. The auction will close Monday, October 3, a new item will be posted. This auction will be ongoing and funds raised will go towards improvements of the SCC building facade -- matching a City of Saskatoon grant. You can view the auction piece on the SCC website home page www.saskcraftcouncil.org or in the SCC Gallery. If you have any inquiries or would be interested in donating your work, please contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 23 or scc.editor@sasktel.net. The SCC would like to thank those of you who contacted the SCC with your generous donations. The response has been fantastic!

Board Policy
At the SCC annual meeting this year, a motion was passed requesting that the SCC Board establish a clear and public process for selection for participation in SCC events.
At the September 14 meeting of the SCC Board, the following principles to guide participation were adopted:
1. Except in rare cases, every member should have the right to be informed about an opportunity and have their participation considered. [The “rare case” exemption is for things like responding to requests for referrals for particular types of work, and not for any core activities of the SCC.]
2. Access to activities should be open to all qualified members.
3. Staff, Board Members, or Committee Members should not participate in the selection of their own work. In cases where an individual is directly or in a support role involved with an adjudication decision, they will declare a conflict for their own work, and not participate in any discussion or vote respecting their own work.
4. That the primary criteria for selection be quality of work. Depending on the event, those entrusted with making selections can also consider mix and numbers from different mediums, marketability, and so on.
The way these principles will be implemented vary from activity to activity. For example, access to markets is guaranteed for all juried marketing members, while EXPO participation will be chosen by a committee composed of SCC Staff, senior craft artists, and patrons.
We’ll be doing our very best to be more consistent in how we make all members aware of opportunities, with a primary vehicle being this newsletter. If you have any questions about how participation in a particular event or activity will be determined, please give Mark (653.3616 ext. 27) to discuss.

Long-time SCC member Charley Farrero was honoured by winning the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Innovation in the Arts. The prestigious award recognized his innovative work and artistic creativity, his work in training and inspiring new generations of ceramics artists, and his leadership role in organizations such as the Saskatchewan Craft Council.
At the Awards Ceremony held in Regina on September 24, Charley paid special tribute to Jack Sures, Sandi Ledingham, Mel Bolen and June Jacobs for their support to him in his career, and pointed to Joe Fafard as an inspiration.
Another SCC member, Jacob Semko, was a short-listed finalist in the 30 Below category for emerging artists. He was recognized for his role as “a role model, mentor and inspirer of young emerging artists.” |
Cheongju Call for Entries
Cheongju International Craft Biennale 2009. One of the largest Craft Expositions in the world is held every two years in the South Korean city of Cheongju. Canada will be the guest country in 2009. Attached is the call for entries for the core Canadian exhibition for Cheongju. Also attached is a guide for photographic standards for the entries.
The scale and importance of this exhibition is difficult to overstate. In 2007, the Biennale attracted 580,000 visitors from 53 countries. It is a great honour for the Canadian craft community to be invited to participate as the guest country.
Some pieces of the Cheongju exhibition will also be selected to form an exhibition of Canadian Craft at the cultural component of the Vancouver Olympics. This exhibition will be displayed at the Vancouver Museum. As a result, participation in this exhibition offers the opportunity for unprecedented exposure both nationally and internationally. See PDF
