NEW Cheongju International Craft Biennale - Travel Survey
In 2009 Canadian fine craft will be featured at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale. This $6M festival presents craftspeople, collectors and supporters with a unique opportunity to travel to South Korea to experience this event and soak up a bit of this rich and ancient culture. If this idea interests you please take a few minutes to complete a short survey. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=gzPZ2G_2bu4eEpFm7g5FKCwA_3d_3d

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority reports a great response to the call for 500 wind chimes. They asked us to pass on the following message: NO MORE FOR NOW. They’ve received many great prototypes, and will be placing their orders very shortly.

Thank you! Reception. Saskatchewan’s economic boom and the resulting increase in commercial rental rates have claimed a victim. After many years of operating Prairie Pottery, Ron and Rusty Kurenda are being forced to close the doors of the store. It is a sad day for members of Saskatchewan’s clay community. The good news is that Ron and Rusty will still be around and planning to keep as busy as ever.

The SCC is holding a reception for Rusty and Ron to express our appreciation for their years of service operating Prairie Pottery. It will be held at the SCC Gallery (813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) on Sunday, June 1 at 2pm. All producers and patrons of great pottery are invited to attend. Others who know and appreciate the Kurenda’s are also warmly welcomed.

Gift Certificate Program. The gift certificates are at the printers. We advertised the certificates in the EXPO catalogue. The big kick off comes in the week prior Mother’s Day. During that time, three radio stations in the province will be using gift certificates for on-air giveaways. We will also be purchasing 54 radio ads on C95 as a Mother’s Day sale promotion. So.... you can still sign up for the gift certificate program. The contract is attached.

Dimensions Evaluation Process. Following the introduction of a theme to Dimensions, we’re evaluating the impact, as well as looking for ways to improve other aspects. Survey’s were sent to members plus every person who has entered Dimensions in the past three years. We’ve had a good response, and have just started to enter the data for evaluation. We’ll report the results next newsletter. The next step will be a series of meetings to discuss future options for Dimensions. The first will be held in Saskatoon (3rd Floor, SCC Gallery, 813 Broadway) on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30 pm. Other meetings will be scheduled as rooms are booked. We’ll keep you posted.

Waterfront Publicity. We’re joining the 21st Century in advertising Waterfront this year. One part of the campaign will be the production of two “You Tube” spots promoting the market. They will be funny, informative, and, well, different. If you are participating in Waterfront, and want to become a You Tube star, we’ll be doing some filming on Saturday, May 3. We’ll need you and a few items that you make so that we can feature you and yours in the ad. Call Chris at 653.3616 ext. 24 for more details and to book your appointment with immortality. In other Waterfront news, billboards go up on May 26th at three high traffic locations in Saskatoon. Ads will be appearing shortly, including in the Jazz Festival program.

The Western Producer will be publishing a summer activity insert at the end of April. This will be in 68,000 copies of this weekly newspaper, and will also be distributed in Saskatchewan Tourism information booths. The SCC has contributed to this with an article promoting summer Craft markets. The piece profiles the work of 5 SCC members. Ask your farming friends for a copy.

She’s Back. Donna will back at work next week. Drop by if you want to admire her tan and hear the stories of her adventures in Mexico. Some things are best left unsaid in a print publication. We’d like to thank Amanda Bosiak for her great service this winter while Donna was away. Her competence, efficiency and good humour were great assets to the SCC.

Cheongju International Craft Biennale
Three Korean representatives from the Cheongju International Craft Biennale will be in Calgary from April 25 to 27. Mark Stobbe, Ken Wilkinson and Mickey Woodard will be there to discuss Canada’s participation (October 2009) in this huge and prestigious event.

Midnight Madness
The SCC has taken the lead in organizing a Saskatoon Gallery “Midnight Madness” event on June 20. Most public and commercial galleries in the city will stay open till midnight. The date coincides with the opening of the Jazz Festival, the summer solstice, and the kick off (the next morning) to Waterfront. If anyone has an idea for a better name for this event, please let Mark know at scc.director@sasktel.net or 653.3616 ext. 27.

Annual General Meeting - scheduled Sunday, June 22. Please stay tuned for location.

On VANOC's website it says that the registry is "the opportunity to stay informed and in touch with diverse artists from across Canada and abroad. By submitting your information to our Artist Registry, you will be included in a centralized database that members and affiliates of VANOC can reference when programming events.
