SCC Jury Session

FINE CRAFT AUCTION REPORT
It’s one for two in Fine Craft Auctions this year.
First – the good news. The Saskatoon Auction on February 7 was an unqualified success. We don’t yet have all the bills and ticket revenue in, and so can’t give the bottom line as yet. However, we can report that:
• Over 300 people came to the event, had a good time and bid vigorously,
• 51 of the 53 pieces up for sale were declared sold. We did over $28,000 in sales of Fine Craft.
• St. Paul’s Hospital patients and school students had work in the auction that sold for good very good prices. For these people, it was their first sale of craft or art – and they were thrilled.

Thanks to all the volunteers, craftspeople, hotel staff, and patrons who made this evening such as success. And a special thanks to Kelly Minisofer and his helpers from Grasswood Auctions for volunteering their services.

Cheques for work sold are being processed, and will be in the mail soon!

Now the bad news. The Regina Fine Craft Auction was cancelled due to advance poor ticket sales. We were on track to lose about $6,000 in the cost of staging the event – and had no comfort that we would be producing a proper bidding crowd.

For members who have contributed work:
• We divided the work we received between the two auctions to get a good mix of mediums, price points, and artists. For those who were put in the Regina auction, we apologize that you were denied this sales opportunity.
• People with work that did not sell can pick up their work at the SCC office (if you live in Saskatoon or are in town). We will return the remaining work to people next week. If you would like to have this work left at the SCC for our consignment sales program, please fill out the form (downloadable at www.saskcraftcouncil.org) and talk to Chris about prices, etc.

Quite frankly, we are puzzled by the lack of ticket sales in Regina. For example, in Saskatoon, we mailed 525 letters to EXPO patrons, etc. promoting the Auction. This directly resulted in over 80 tickets sold. In Regina, we mailed almost 700 hundred letters – and sold not one ticket as a result of this particular promotional effort.

This is a situation we’d like to remedy. If anyone has any thoughts on this, please call Mark at 653-3516 ext. 27 or e-mail scc.director@sasktel.net.
