GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
To date, we’ve had 10 people sign the contract to participate in the gift certificate program. That’s maybe one quarter of the members who have said informally that they like the idea. Please note:
• If you have just mentioned to a SCC staff person that you want to be in, you have not yet signed up.
• If you’ve thought to yourself that you’d like to be involved, you have not yet signed up.
• If you’ve filled out the form and not sent it in, you have not signed up.
You’ve only signed up once you’ve filled in the form (download from our website) See PDF for details and send it in.

We’d love to start promoting this and make some sales, but we need a critical mass of participating craftspeople to begin.

So.... If you like this idea, if you want people knocking on your door eager to buy your work, fill in the form and get it in. We'd like to hear from you.

We’ve received confirmation that they will be funding the Premier’s Award at $3,000. We’d like to thank Premier Brad Wall for his support for promoting Excellence in Craft.

Incremental Funding From Government
We heard from about 20 members on how to spend the incremental marketing and development money that the SCC has been promised by the Saskatchewan Government and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. In general, many members wished to see more of the money spent on direct promotion of Craft. Many different good ideas were advanced on how to do this.

As a result of hearing these views, we’ve adjusted our initial proposal to increase the weight of direct promotion. Our plans now include:
• A major promotion of Craft centred around the re-launch and rebranding of Waterfront this June,
• The development of a printed guide to Craftpeople that will be distributed to market patrons (both SCC markets and others) and be available through tourist information centres in the summer of 2009.
• A series of marketing workshops, and
• Launching a viability study to determine whether the SCC can successfully open a retail gallery in Regina and/or Calgary.

We’re just waiting for word from the Arts Board as to whether these plans meet their approval. That is expected shortly – at which time we’ll begin implementation.

One thing for marketing members to note – with this additional funding, there will be a dramatic increase in the advertising for Waterfront this year. The sale will be on June 21st (a week after Bazaart) at River Landing. New Date. New Location. And many new customers.

Dimensions Growth 2008 Kickoff - You don't want to miss this!
This evening is guaranteed to: "enrich with a maker" and "engage with a marker." Jamie Russell, wood artisan extraordinare and Dr. Sandra Alfoldy, voted favourite professor by the students at NSCAD, offer you an evening you won't want to miss. We are partnering with the Mendel Art Gallery to host these talks by this year's jurors for the SCC's annual Dimensions Growth 2008 exhibition. Not to be mistaken for the post-jurying remarks, these talks will take place the evening before the jurors start looking at the entries. (As a recent graduate of NSCAD, I can attest to Alfoldy's highly informative and fun-filled presentations -- Alfoldy was my professor for two courses and I looked forward to each and every lecture with delightful anticipation.

Presentation date: Wednesday, April 2, 2008 starting at 7pm, Mendel Art Gallery (Auditorium), 950 Spadina Crecent East, Saskatoon.

Jamie Russell will present slides and talk about his fine crafted wooden work.

Dr. Sandra Alfoldy will present a lecture titled, "Materiality and Meaning in the Crafts" at 7:30pm. Author of Neocraft: Modernity and the Crafts, Alfoldy is Associate Professor of Craft History at NSCAD University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Take a look at the line-up of public lectures scheduled at the Mendel.
