GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Gift Certificates:
On the Waterfront!
Do any of you remember Marlin Brando expressing his regrets – “I coulda been a contender!”
This year, we’re setting out to make Waterfront a contender as one of the best and most lucrative Craft markets around. We’ve had a helping hand. The Government of Saskatchewan (through the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture & Sport and the Saskatchewan Arts Board) have provided additional funds that will allow us to really beef up our advertising from what it was in past years.
The new date and new location allows us to rebrand and revitalize the event. The additional money will help us put some “oomph” to this. Here’s what’s in the works so far:
• Lori Leach and her design company, Kinetic Design, has agreed to donate their expertise and time to develop a new logo and identity for Waterfront. Stay tuned for this.
• We’re booking billboards that will be going up a month before Waterfront.
• We’re printing 20,000 “Free Admission” tickets for distribution.
• We’re working with the Jazz Festival to do some cross promotional activity.
• We’ll be doing a significant radio buy, including having an “on-location” broadcast during Waterfront.
We’re also going to try some new approaches. Here’s the first.
We’re going to try doing promotion through YouTube. We’ll be scheduling a session with a young film maker. Members who will be exhibiting at Waterfront can come and have a short video made of themselves being witty, funny, insightful, or just engaging about themselves and their work. These will be posted on YouTube, and our advertising will help drive people to see you perform.
We can’t promise to make you as famous as Brando, but we’ll do our best to make you a contender for the most famous craftsperson on You Tube. Let Gale know by March 31; call 6953.3616 ext. 23 or email scc.editor@sasktel.net if you want to be famous.
GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Philosophers have long debated the question: “If a tree falls in a forest with nobody to hear it, does it make a sound?”
You’ve all answered a similar question: “If an Executive Director gives a plaintive cry, do any craft people hear it.”
The answer seems to be yes. We’ve had a lot of people calling and e-mailing about the gift certificate program. Keep those contracts coming in. This now looks like it can fly.
Dimensions Growth 2008 Lecture - April 2, 7pm at the Mendel Art Gallery
Jamie Russell, wood artisan extraordinare and Dr. Sandra Alfoldy, voted favourite professor by the students at NSCAD, offer you an evening you won't want to miss. We are partnering with the Mendel Art Gallery to host these talks by this year's jurors for the SCC's annual Dimensions Growth 2008 exhibition. Not to be mistaken for the post-jurying remarks, these talks will take place the evening before the jurors start looking at the entries. (As a recent graduate of NSCAD, I can attest to Alfoldy's highly informative and fun-filled presentations -- Alfoldy was my professor for two courses and I looked forward to each and every lecture with delightful anticipation.
Presentation date: Wednesday, April 2, 2008 starting at 7pm, Mendel Art Gallery (Auditorium), 950 Spadina Crecent East, Saskatoon.
Jamie Russell will present slides and talk about his fine crafted wooden work.
Sandra Alfoldy will present a lecture titled, "Materiality and Meaning in the Crafts" at 7:30pm. Author of Neocraft: Modernity and the Crafts, Alfoldy is Associate Professor of Craft History at NSCAD University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
