|
Rose Anne and Jude’s hand dipped beeswax candles are currently on tour with the SCC’s Dimensions “Growth” exhibition – which is fitting because growth is exactly what the duo from Big River are striving for in the coming year.
2008 was a record year for mwCandles, with successful sales at both Wintergreen and Evergreen, and increased customer and custom orders. This year they are looking for ways to expand their marketing opportunities and are preparing for bigger orders. They have been spending these cold winter months over the warm comfort of the wax bats in order to stock up for the height of marketing season. Jude is also tackling the decidedly un-sexy task of transferring their business accounts to the computer.
The success of their business can be attributed to the growing desire from consumers for environmentally friendly and lovingly handmade products. RoseAnne and Jude consider each candle a sculpture in beeswax, and pride themselves on producing flawless pieces with unmarred, mirror-like surfaces. In addition, they keep it all in the local community by using wax from West Cowan Apiaries. After many years in the business, the pair from mwCandles continues to believe in the products they offer, and they take a great amount of pride in introducing the old world romance of the hand dipped candle to the world.

Week of Craft
The SCC has asked the Saskatoon Mayor and City Council to proclaim April 12 to 18 as Week of Craft. There will be a lot happening that week, including:
• Dimensions jurying. This year, the jury sessions will occur at the Mendel Art Gallery Auditorium. On Wednesday, April 15th, the collection of entries will be available for public display. You can pick your own show, and see how your judgement aligns with Mel Bolen and Chantel Gilbert.
• Dimensions critique session – at the Mendel on Saturday, April 18.
• Jamie Russell show opening at the Mendel – Friday, April 17. Wood carving at it’s finest.
• Public talk, Dimensions jurors Mel Bolen and Chantel Gilbert, Wednesday, April 15.
• Public talk, Stephen Hogbin, Thursday, April 16. Sponsored by the Mendel.
• Broadway Craft Gallery. From April 13 to 18th, the stores in the Broadway district of Saskatoon will be coming together to form the world’s largest craft gallery. To participate, (link here to call).
• Special Exhibition – SCC Gallery. A special one-week exhibition from the 16 craft people who were chosen to participate in EXPO 2009.
That’s the game plan so far. If anyone has any other ideas, put them forward. Let’s make the Week of Craft something to remember.
EXPO
The world-wide economic woes have claimed a victim in Saskatchewan. Because of the economic uncertainty, it was proving difficult to line up enough corporate sponsors for EXPO this year. As a result, the SCC has decided to put EXPO 2009 on hold. We hope to be back with this event in 2010. The 16 craft people who were committed for EXPO this year will be coming together for a special one-week exhibition of great craft to be held in the SCC Gallery during the Week of Craft – April 12 to 18.
Erotic Craft Show - It’s lewd • It’s lusty • It’s lovely
The response to the erotic show call for entries was great – we’ll have a wonderful show at Positive Passions (1C-1005 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon). We’ve been wondering what lurks in the minds of SCC members – and now we know that it is kind of exciting. The show will run from Feb 9 to 14, with the reception on Thursday, Feb 12. A couple things you should know:
• Admission to the show is a toonie,
• Work is for sale – so bring your cheque book. You’ll love what’s there.
• You can bring your mother (well, maybe... ) but not anyone under the age of 18.
See you at Positive Passions next week!

Thought of the Week: The Cash Nexus - Mark Stobbe
In our recent member survey (thanks again for the great response), one third of the SCC membership did not define themselves as professional craft people. Of these, 86 % reported that they make craft for personal pleasure. In addition, the various guilds and media specific organizations that are affiliated to the SCC have a combined membership of several thousand.
That’s a lot of people making craft for personal pleasure. It also means that there’s a lot of stuff being made that has to go somewhere – that has to be put to use. And some of this craft produced for personal pleasure is of very high quality.
So what becomes of it all? It seems to me, amateur craft people usually develop in a progression. First, they keep their work to themselves and their immediate family. As their skill and confidence improves, and the volume of craft increases, they start giving it away to a larger circle of friends and extended family. Finally, someone offers to buy a piece. The craft producer has a pivotal decision at this point. How much should they charge?
It’s my strong belief that as soon as an object is produced for sale, the producer’s relationship with the object has changed. It is no longer simply a labour of love (although it will still be that). It is producing something to sell. The recipient’s relationship has also changed. Instead of being honoured by receiving a gift of time and talent, they are simply buying something. As a result, when a craft person begins to sell work, they should charge the accepted professional price for that object – and not simply be flattered at making a sale or content with getting the cost of their material back. Charging too little:
• Hurts the ability of professional craft producers to make a decent living, and
• Devalues your own work for all time.
And here’s a thought about the purchaser who wants “a deal” because “you are not a professional”. That person has just insulted you and your skills. That person is saying that your time and talent, the hundreds of hours you spent mastering your craft, are without value. If you want to make something to give to your mother or mother-in-law as a gift, great. If you want to give it away to some stranger who has just insulted you, well, I guess that’s your decision.
