1. Teresa Gagne - Printable PDF

When we caught up with potter Teresa Gagne, she was sitting down for a cup of tea. Her teapot of choice is a small wood-fired one by another potter, and the cup was one of her own.
The choices symbolize her character. She’s confident about what she does, and shares her love of clay. When asked about her highlights for 2008, she talks about teaching others:
• A family that came out to her studio for their own family workshop;
• A writer from Regina who is giving her daughter two “clay days” for her 18th birthday present;
• Young Offenders at Kilburn Hall who were taught to express their feelings making ceramic masks;
“Being about to share with others what I love is one of my greatest pleasures,” says Gagne.

Sometimes, though, choices must be made about excellence. Her favourite piece in 2008 was one created for Dimensions - Growth. It was never entered, but remains in her yard as a reminder of the learning achieved in the effort. It has company. A hole in the yard has been filled with the seconds and test glazed samples – a repository of the by-products of over a decade of experimentation and growth. One can only imagine what an archaeologist in future centuries will make of this site. Particularly intriguing will be the first of her twisted stem wine goblets – works which remind the wine drinker of the vines themselves. Gagne makes them in order to savour the feeling of looseness and growth they give her.

2. SCC Question of the Day - Thoughts from the ED
Seconds And Craft - Printable PDF
When I first started at the Craft Council, I kept hearing (usually unhappy) craft producers talking about their seconds. My first thought was that I was surrounded by a bunch of duellists. However, people seemed too nice for that, so I checked the dictionary and discovered there are 30 different meanings to the word “seconds”. The one that seem most likely to apply is:

23. Usually, seconds. goods below the first or highest quality, esp. containing visible flaws. Compare FIRST (def. 16), THIRD (def. 12).

That means that seconds are worse than firsts, which according to the 17th meaning of this word is: Usually, firsts. Commerce.
a. a product or goods of the first or highest quality.
b. goods produced according to specifications, without visible flaws.

If seconds are worse than firsts, they are better than lowly thirds which the dictionary does not even bother to define except in relationship to firsts and seconds. It is a comforting reflection on the skill of SCC members that I’ve never heard any member complaining about their thirds.

However, the question remains of what to do with seconds. Selling them for a reduced price undermines the reputation of your work. Giving them to family members can achieve the same thing. Using them as garden ornaments can be good, but, after a long career, the end result could be fewer tomatoes.

Sue Robertson has suggested some version of a “smash em” fundraiser – turning the discarded seconds into a celebration of the quality of firsts while having fun and raising money.

If you’ve got any thoughts on this – give Mark a call (653.3616 ext. 27) or email scc.director@sasktel.net.

3. SCC Surveys
The SCC is planning for the future. Part of this process involves seeking your views. Just before New Year’s, we sent out a request that members fill out an on-line survey. 177 of you have completed this survey – thank you so much for the quick response. Some of you experienced some technical difficulties – to you, our apologies. We are in discussions with the web survey company to try and find out what went wrong in your cases.
If you have not filled out the survey, you still can by clicking here: SCC Survey

Some interesting finding so far:
• 65% of SCC members are professional craft people
• 42.9% of our professional members say the operation of the markets are the most important thing we do – 24% say it is spreading information.
• 40 % say the biggest problem they face in expanding sales is access to markets or the expense of marketing. 32% report they are producing and selling all they can.
• 86% of professional members gave craft to charities and community groups for fundraising last year. The average value of these donations was $1,123.

We are doing another survey for people who are members of guilds and medium specific organizations. Could you pass on the following link to your friends that are guild members so that we can hear their views: www.surveymonkey.com

From Here to There in One Piece – How to Pack Fine Craft for Transport

Monday, Feb 23, 2009, 7pm
SCC Gallery, 813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon

Presented by Leslie Potter and Judy Haraldson, SCC Exhibitions & Education Coordinators

Want to learn how to pack your craft works so they survive touring shows? Need to ship a delicate piece to a client? Wondering how to safely store some pieces away for a while? Les and Judy have packed up touring Dimensions exhibitions for years. They’ve handled many other travelling shows that are displayed in the SCC Gallery. They’ve seen good packing and lots of bad packing. This workshop is their opportunity to share what they’ve learned. They’ll cover packing methods for various types of craft – including clay, wood, textiles, glass, mixed media works, furniture, etc.

“There are a handful of craftspeople who reliably pack their work. The rest could do a much better job with some simple techniques. Part of caring about the quality of your work is also making sure it can survive getting where it has to go.”

To register, contact Les or Judy at or scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net or call 653.3616 ext. 25
Workshop Fee: Members - $10; Non-members - $20

4b. Stephen Hogbin Workshop - Printable PDF
- Where do ideas come from? How do you develop and take ideas forward? These are the main questions addressed at the Building Creativity Workshop.

While some of the exercises will confirm what we all know and do there will be others that broaden and deepen an understanding for the creative process. The regular tool box is quite familiar but what do we have in our creative tool box to help create and move ideas forward?

Different circumstances require a different approach for the creative process. Knowing when and how to apply specific strategies will illuminate how creativity can be mastered. Slides will be shown at every new point to illustrate the ideas, exercises and strategies. What makes one piece work better than another and how do we decide that one object works better than another? What are the criteria for a successful work?

STEPHEN HOGBIN
Stephen Hogbin is an artist and maker who brought a distinctive approach to wood turning, furniture and architectural commissions. Author of the books Wood Turning, Appearance and Reality: A Visual Handbook for Artists, Designers and Makers, and The Purpose of the Object as well as numerous articles. He has focused on the creative process while teaching at a wide range of schools including Sheridan College, the University of Toronto, Georgian College, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Australian National University and the University of the Arts (Philadelphia).

PREREQUISITES
Advanced techniques are not essential. Interest and an open mind for new possibilities are mandatory.

5. MARKETS
SCC MARKET CHANGES IN 2009
- Printable PDF
According to the recent member survey, several of you think that the SCC’s markets are the most important element in our programming. In response to your preferences, we are starting two new markets this year - Springcraft Market in Moose Jaw and Harvest Moon Fine Craft Market in Lloydminster. We are also planning to have an SCC sales booth at Gardenscape: The Outdoor Living Show in Saskatoon, Mar 27-29.

SPRINGCRAFT MARKET
For many years Bill Keen and other SCC members had a craft market in Moose Jaw at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa. The venue is ideal with the ambience that we are looking for and with the Casino across the street we have a great connection to visitors with money to spend. This will not be a large market as there is only room for about 25 booths so we will have a committee to review the applications if the response is overwhelming. May 9-10.

WATERFRONT CRAFT ART FESTIVAL
The change in location and date worked well last year and we will have an aggressive promotional campaign this year as well. June 13.

SASKATCHEWAN HANDCRAFT FESTIVAL
Last year was another successful market in Battleford. The reported average sale was up almost 40% from 2007 and the attendance was strong. The long history of SHF means that our visitors are well educated about Fine Craft and appreciate the work of SCC members. July 17-19.

HARVEST MOON FINE CRAFT MARKET
Lloydminster is one of the province’s boom towns and there has been a successful Christmas sale here for many years. We are using the same venue as the Christmas sale, the Stockade Convention Centre, which has the advantage of being a very busy spot so everyone will know where to find us. Sept 12-13.

WINTERGREEN
Our marketing campaign for Wintergreen ’08 led to an increase of almost 30% in Saturday’s attendance. Friday and Sunday were consistent with 2007 but the best news was that the average reported sale was up 30% over last year. Join us for the “battle of the craft sales” as we go head-to-head with Our Best To You. Nov 13-15.

6. Calls for Entry
6a. Erotic Craft Show - Printable PDF
The SCC will be partnering with the Positive Passions store in Saskatoon to hold a show of Erotic Craft during Valentine’s week, 2009. The show will be held in the meeting rooms at the Positive Passions store.

Work in the show can be one-of-a-kind, limited edition, or production pieces. Work can be “for sale” with a 40% commission rate being charged. Multiple copies of the same piece can be provided to replace pieces as work is sold.

Work should be suggestive of human sexuality – it can be either explicit or suggestive. Let your imagination and your libido be your guide. Work in any medium will be considered.

The show will be juried from digital or printed images of the work. To be considered, please forward your entry to scc.exhibitions@sasktel.net along with the following information:
Title: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Material: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dimensions: _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Number of similar pieces that can be provided: __________________________________________________________________________
Artist statement about the piece (30 words maximum):

All photographs and entry information must be received by Wednesday, Jan 21. Those selected will be notified by Monday, Jan 26. All work must be received by Tuesday, Feb 3.

6b. Broadway Craft Gallery
The SCC has reached an agreement with the Broadway Business Improvement District to create the “Broadway Craft Gallery” from April 14 to 18. This will involve having a small craft show and sale in each business in the Broadway district. Where possible, the Craft will be tied to the nature of the business (e.g. vases in the flower stores, piggy banks in the banks). Work will be for sale with a 40% commission being charged. Details will be sent out shortly, but in the meantime, start thinking about creative fits for your work with different types of stores.

6c. GARDENSCAPE - Printable PDF
The SCC will be operating a sales booth featuring Saskatchewan Craft at Gardenscape: The Outdoor Living Show held from Mar 27 to 29, 2009 in Saskatoon. We are putting out a call for work that can be displayed and sold in this booth.

In 2008, 24,206 people attended Gardenscape. Of these, 71% purchased goods. Attendees tended to be female, with 47% from 51 to 65 years old and 34% from 21-35 years old.

Work in the exhibition can be one-of-a-kind, limited edition, or production pieces. Works submitted in the exhibition will be “for sale” with a 40% commission rate being charged. Multiple copies of the same piece can be provided in order to replace exhibition pieces as work is sold.

Work can be in any medium – however, the work should be related to gardening or the enjoyment of yard space. Work that features a natural motif and an emphasis on green living will be preferred. Gardenscape will have a 4,000 square foot butterfly exhibit, so any work related to butterflies would be welcomed.

The work sold at this booth will be juried from photographs of the work. To be considered, please forward images of work you would like considered to scc.memberservices@sasktel.net. In addition, the images should be accompanied by the following information:

Type of Work: _________________________________________________________________
Material: _____________________________________________________________________
Dimensions in (cm): _________ (h) ________ (w) ________ (d)
Number of pieces that can be provided: ___________________________________________
Price range of pieces: ___________________________________________________________

6d. “Flatland Fibre – Off the Wall” will be a SCC Gallery exhibition showcasing three-dimensional fibre works by Saskatchewan fibre artists. We want to show off our fabulous fibre arts during Quilt Saskatchewan 2009 when the Saskatoon Quilters Guild hosts a national quilting conference – The Canadian Quilters’ Association Alternate Year Event, May 27 – 30, 2009. Let’s see 3-dimensional fibre works in all sorts of techniques - quilts, wall hangings, clothing, sculpture, felting, knitting, weaving, and so on. The sky’s the limit.

SCC Exhibitions & Education Coordinators will curate the exhibition from submitted entries. Leslie Potter has a Master's degree in Fine Art and is a sculptor and teacher for U of S Certificate of Art and Design; Judy Haraldson is an award winning weaver with a Diploma in Applied Arts – Weaving from SIAST Woodland. Both have extensive experience with many craft mediums and Fine Craft exhibitions.

OTHER NEWS
11. ARTfullNESS – A Collaborative Art Event at Ness Creek in July 2009 (Printable PDF)

This is a follow-up to the initial invitation for Expression of Interest that was sent to Emma ’08 participants on December 10th. This will provide more background and detail to the initial invitation.

Background
Five different organizations conduct operations at the Ness Creek Site. The Jack Millikin Centre is a partnership of these five organizations and will take the lead on this project.

ARTfullNESS was conceived in conversations with Emma ’06 and ’08 participants about creating collaborative works that would become permanent installations at the Ness Creek Site. Discussion also included the notion of doing a project on “in-between Emma” years. This project is seen as an extension of the Emma legacy with its own unique flavor.

We have scheduled ARTfullNESS to coincide with the 2009 Ness Creek Music Festival. The organizers of the Festival are very interested in providing their audience a visual art experience in addition to the music experience. All involved believe ARTfullNESS will be a perfect complement to the musical art already offered. The people attending the Ness Creek Festival will be able to observe your work as it is completed so there will be a public aspect to the creative process. We hope it will be the beginning of a long line of similar projects. And it will be a permanent legacy for all who experience the site to enjoy!

Project Description
ARTfullNESS 2009 will be the first of many such events to contribute to the Ness Creek Art Park. Interested artists are asked to submit their names to Cathy Sproule who along with Gord Olson and Craig Campbell will select the final team of 6-8 participants. Once invited, a long distance design session will take place. There is no preconceived notion for the finished work. Anything goes within the 320 acre site, from a single large scale piece placed in the center of the “town circle” to several smaller pieces scattered along the many groomed trails. The only limit on the scale and scope will be the budget.

Design Process
Team members will share design ideas through available media (internet/fax/mail/courier/telephone) or in person. Craig Campbell will coordinate design process to a point that materials and equipment can be organized. It is understood that with this group much of the details of the design will take place once the team has assembled at the Ness Creek Site. Local team members may visit the Ness Creek Site in the spring if required.

Costs
Participants will not incur any personal costs. All travel and accommodation costs will be covered (with individual Canada Council support where available). An honorarium will be made available if anticipated funding is obtained – JMC will not be able to confirm an honorarium until June.

Materials budget will not exceed $2000.
Equipment budget will not exceed $1000.
Canadian participants will apply for travel funding where available, including Canada Council for the Arts.

Timeline
January 15 - deadline to express interest to cathyspoule@saktel.net
January 30 - initial team selection complete and offers to participate issued
February 15 - confirmation of participation provided to JMC by participant
March 1 - design process begins
June 1 - design concept complete, complete list of required materials and equipment submitted to JMC by Craig
July 13 - team arrives at Ness Creek Site
July 14-16 - work begins
July 17-19 - project is completed in front of 3,000 Music Festival goers

12. Warning - Internet Fraud
This is to inform all SCC members and artists of an internet SCAM. I was a victim of this scam. I had placed an ad on saskatoonhomepage.ca for sale of my art piece and was contacted by individuals from the UK wanting to buy my work. They said they had a shipper who would handle the pick up and delivery of the work. A price was agreed upon and a money order was sent to me for payment. I cashed the money order, holding back my amount, and was to send via Western Union the remaining amount. After doing so, I was informed that there was problems and that the deal had to be cancelled. I have subsequently found out from my bank that the money orders were counterfeit. I have been charged by the bank for the money orders totaling close to $1500 CAD. Additionally, I had dealings with another individual from the UK who sent me a cheque from HSBC bank in Quebec with similar instructions. After hearing from the bank about the counterfeit money orders I went to my other bank where I cashed the cheque and made inquiries. It too was counterfeit. Consequently, I have had to pay the bank back for this cheque for $3420 CAD. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. I have filed fraud reports with Western Union, Internet Fraud Company at www.ic3.gov, canadian phone busters, and the Saskatoon Police Service. It is doubtful that the Police, given their ?workload? and the nature of the internet will do anything about this beyond the filing of the report. I have copies of all e-mail, all money transfers, envelopes that will be forwarded to the authorities if required. I urge all members to be careful with all dealings, not just internationally, and to keep all copies of dealings and interactions. Thank you and keep yourself protected. - SCC Member
