Leila Olfert has been a member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council since 2006, and comes from a rich tradition of fibre arts. She began as a quilter but admits, the squares of cloth are not strictly enough to maintain her interest and she is constantly whipping up new experiments.
Currently she is working on mixed media fibre and pinhole photography – exposing the photographic image directly onto fabric, then proceeding to mould the fibres into a sculptural form. She also spends much of her time with her “little hats” – felted and formed wearable sculpture. Leila says, “Texture and colour are my thing – sometimes I don’t know when to stop!”
This May, Leila will be making a stop at “OFF THE GRID” the 2009 International Textile Conference of the Surface Design Association in Kansas City. Leila is a long time member and she’s excited to go; a competition among conference attendees will send top picks on tour across the United States; “I’m just a little Saskatoon girl up against the Pros!”

The scarf was freeform knitted all in one piece. The flowers and leaves were knit in as I came to that point in the scarf. The spots are French Knots. I was dreaming of spring when I knit this!
The other piece is called Galvanic Evolution. The texture is created with beads, wrapped into unbleached cotton. Colourful French Knots are scattered throughout. This was inspired by a photograph I took of dinosaur skin at the Tyrell Museum in Drumheller. It is going to be hanging in a textile show in Kansas City for the summer.

2. First Day of Spring and Narooz (Iranian New Year)
Great News! It’s the first day of spring. That means potters don’t have to sleep in their kilns to keep warm, glass workers don’t have to warm their hands in their furnaces, weavers can sell their work instead of wearing it, and woodworkers won’t be tempted to burn their pieces to keep warm. Spring!
3. Annual General Meeting
Circle Sunday, May 24th on your calendar. It will be the date of the fun, informative SCC Annual General Meeting. It will be south of Saskatoon (Highway 11) at the estate of Louis J. Paquette, with the business meeting, and educational, pot luck supper, and fun.

5. Cheongju International Craft Biennale
We’ve received some excellent submissions for work for the marketplace, and are just lining up financing so that we can start placing orders. Thanks for your support.
A reminder – the deadline for entering the Unity and Diversity Exposition is just over a week away. You can enter online by going to Unity and Diversity Call for Entry
6. Playing Cards
The deck of playing cards is filling up fast. Reservations for cards have come in from Newfoundland to British Columbia – so act now to avoid disappointment. We will be distributing 10,000 decks of craft playing cards across the country. The playing face of a card can contain an image of your work, your name, and your website address. The cost is $75 per card, or $150 per face card. To reserve your card, contact Gale at 653.3616 ext. 26 or scc.editor@sasktel.net. We are also tweaking the suits by expanding “jewellery” into “metal” – which will allow our bigger metal workers to participate. For all you disappointed textile people – still sorry for now. Next deck.
7. Gardenscape
If you are going to Gardenscape in Saskatoon next weekend, please be sure to drop by the SCC booth. If this trial sales project works out, we’ll be doing more of this in the future.
8. Call for Recipes
We have received many recipes from Craft Council Members. We know there are more people with great recipes out there. Please e-mail your favourites to saskcraftcouncil@sasktel.net so that we can put out a really, really good cookbook. Without your recipe, it will fall short of perfection. And remember, having a recipe in the book gives you the opportunity to talk a bit about your craft. PDF
9. Seconds Smashing Event for Waterfront
In the last e-news, we had a short survey about the wisdom smashing seconds at Waterfront as a publicity event. Most of you thought this was a bad idea, so this will not be going forward. Thank you to all of you who shared your thoughts on this.
10. Fame and Fortune
Remember, we want to help promote your successes. If you’ve have won a grant, got accepted into a national or international exhibition, are getting represented by a gallery outside of Saskatchewan, please let us know. We can help tell the world. Success begats success. Drop a note to Mark at scc.director@sasktel.net.
11. Membership in the SCC
In the past year, the provincial government has moved funding for the SCC from SaskCulture to the Saskatchewan Arts Board. We are now viewed by the government as a Cultural Industry Service Organization – speaking for, and acting on behalf of the entire Craft sector.
The Government has also introduced The Arts Professions Act (link here) which, among other things, creates a definition of a professional artist.
These are good developments – and they should also cause us to look at ourselves as an organization, asking:
• Who do we now serve?
• Is there anyone we are missing?
• How can we do a better job?
• Do different groups of existing or potential members have different needs? Can we tailor our activities to better suit specific groups?
In a few weeks, you’ll be getting some proposed by-law changes in the mail. These will be considered and voted on at the May 24th Annual General meeting. The idea is to ensure that every member gets voice and vote in the SCC, but to create different categories of members with services and benefits targeted to serve each category. The proposed categories are:
• Professional Craft person
• Craft person (i.e. someone making craft primarily for personal pleasure)
• Patron
• Affiliated Marketer (someone who sells at our markets, but is not a Saskatchewan Craft person, such as out of province craft people, food retailers and visual artists)
• Student
• Organizational (guilds, galleries, etc.)
More information and the proposed by-laws will be in the mail soon.
12. SCC Markets Application deadlines for the SCC markets are as follows:
Waterfront – May 1, 2009
Handcraft Festival – May 31, 2009

OTHER NEWS
35. Copyright & Google
Google is planning on digitizing it ALL, and making it downloadable. Like the music download issue, this excludes concerns for copyright holders, so a class action suit was brought in the US and now has been settled. However, it means action must be made by the "c. holders" or Google just goes ahead anyway.
There is much about it I don't know, because I only heard of it this week on a CBC interview. But for anyone having a book or other copyright to consider, it is significant. Maybe other SCC members do, as I do, and you might want to put out some sort of note to them that information abounds but one source is at the following link. "An Important Message to all Publishers, Authors and Heirs of Authors about the Google Settlement" _http://www.accesscopyright.ca/Default.aspx?id=243
It may affect the SCC's rights about The Craft Factor, too, who knows? There IS a deadline on sign-ups so it is time-sensitive.
