3. Fred Mitschke
Printable PDF

Commissioned work is keeping Ironman Fred Mitschke hopping these days. The Langenburg metal artist is working on unique railings for houses in Regina and a sign for Yorkton Concrete (guess what city). But the most challenging recent project was a metal bar - 11 feet long, 4 feet high, and 28 inches wide. It's big, beautiful and, well, heavy.

"We were lucky - we could take it in through the garage, and they had an open concept split level house," Fred chuckles. "I wouldn't actually recommend one of these for a third floor walk-up condo."

Fred will be at Bazaart this June. If you are not in Regina, you'll have to wait for the fall market season to see his creations.

"I guard my summers," he says. Which means that this summer, if you want to see what the combination of technical skill, a vivid imagination, and scrap metal can yield, you'll have to go to Langenburg or take a peek at his website: www.ironmankreations.com.

4. SCC - ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The SCC’s annual general meeting will be on Sunday, May 24th, 10am at the estate of Louis J. Paquette (south of Saskatoon on Highway 11). Check for details in upcoming e-News.

After the business part of the meeting, we would like to have a big, fun fun fun party. If you are interested in serving on a committee to help plan the festivities, please drop Mark a line at scc.director@sasktel.net or phone at 653.3616 ext. 27.

5. Panel Discussion - Obsolete Spaces
Thursday, March 19, 7:30 pm, SCC Gallery
Come and spend an interesting and thought provoking evening discussing Wendy Weseen's Obsolete Spaces. Chosen panelists will present their views on the works in the show, the theme of abandonment, and the larger issues of rural Saskatchewan. Lively discussions and exchanges of views can be expected.

6. PLAYING WITH A FULL DECK
The craft deck of cards is filling up. We've sold 20 cards to Saskatchewan craft people - and publicity about this has gone out nation-wide through other craft councils. For more details see attached PDF.

7. SCC Markets
The Springcraft Market in Moose Jaw has been cancelled because we did not receive enough applications from members to mount a complete market. We do have the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa booked for May 15-16, 2010 and look forward to launching Springcraft at this ideal location next year. Our other planned new market, Harvest Moon in Lloydminster, is looking to be a huge success.

Application deadlines for the SCC markets are as follows:

Handcraft Festival – May 31, 2009
Wintergreen – June 14, 2009
Harvest Moon – July 1, 2009

8. Waterfront – looking for 15 minutes of fame
We are looking for ways to get a lot of media coverage for Waterfront this year. One smashing idea has been proposed – to learn more about it and to say what you think about it, click here:

10. Fame and Fortune - Mark Stobbe
Saskatchewan is a funny province in many ways. One is that people here place a lot of emphasis on external validity. We tend to believe that something is only really good if it is recognized elsewhere first. In the past few weeks, we’ve tried a little experiment – issuing press releases highlighting the external recognition of some SCC members. Guess what? Both these press releases generated some very favourable media coverage for the craft people involved. External success becomes transformed into increased credibility within the province.

The SCC would like to start doing a lot more of this. If you:
• Have an exhibition outside of Saskatchewan;
• Have a piece accepted into an exhibition outside of Saskatchewan;
• Win an award or get a grant;
• Sell work to a collector or gallery;
• Get work into a gallery outside our borders; or
• Get invited to teach somewhere, or get a residency.

Please let us know in a timely fashion (i.e. as soon as you know). We’ll do two things with this information. In many cases, we’ll try to get media coverage for your success. We’ll also collect the record of Saskatchewan craft success so that we can paint the overall picture of Saskatchewan excellence.

When you have successful news, drop a note to Gale at scc.editor@sasktel.net or call 653.3616 ext. 23.
