03. Summer in Saskatchewan
There’s been a lot of complaining about Saskatchewan’s summer this year. Some people are going so far as to claim that we’ve not had one. One thing has stayed hotter than the weather. That’s the collaborative creation and knowledge sharing of Saskatchewan Craft people.
- The Quilters Guild kicked off the summer with a national conference in Saskatoon in May.
- Craft artists and students spent the May long weekend doing collaborative work at the University of Saskatchewan Sculpture Studio at More Big Fun.
- In July, a group of potters gathered in Meacham to spend several days stoking the fire at the L’Agamine kiln of Charley Farrero.
- The Blacksmith’s gathered in August at the Ness Cree Festival site for CanIron. They made a lot of noise – and a large metal obelisk to mark the entrance way to the festival grounds.
- Wood carvers are gathering at the Gazebo in Shell Lake this weekend – and the turners will be there right behind them next weekend.
- Plans are underway for more – next summer. The EMMA Collaboration will be back – unplugged. Wood turners and carvers are busy planning for an international wood turning symposium in Saskatoon.
That’s Saskatchewan for you. Sharing knowledge. Working together. Having fun. Creating a community.
It’s important to remember that it was not always like this in craft production. Craft techniques were closely guarded secrets. In the Roman Empire, glassblowers were forbidden from travelling in an attempt to protect the secrets of their techniques. The Emperor of China attempted to keep the processes of sericulture and silk weaving secret in order to preserve a monopoly in this cloth – only to be frustrated when the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I smuggled silkworm eggs to Constantinople in hollow canes.
Maybe that’s part of the answer. Saskatchewan does not have kings or emperors to impose secrecy. Left to their own devices, Saskatchewan craft producers demonstrate the generosity of their nature and let the joy of teaching others triumph over the preservation of “secrets”.

STURDY STONE CENTRE ART WORK A WELCOME SURPRISE
by Bart Gazzola
When it comes to art (or dining, or music, or anything else for that matter), it’s enjoyable to find gems in the unlikeliest of places. For example, although I walk past it at least four or five times a week, I’d never given the Sturdy Stone Centre building in downtown Saskatoon much thought, never having had business there.
