01. Happy Holidays
Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the land
Not a craftperson was stirring, not even a hand;
The kilns were all cold, the lathes did not turn
The sales were all done, the money was earned.
The tallies had been done by the makers with care
In the hopes that prosperity soon would be there.
The staff at the SCC hope that everyone had a prosperous marketing season, and that you have a great holiday season – with a wonderful New Year.
This will be the last E-News til next year, but feel free to drop by the Gallery or Traditions for a chat.
02. Spring Craft not happening in Moose Jaw in 2010
As we got further into the planning for the proposed SpringCraft Sale in Moose Jaw this May, it became apparent that the Temple Gardens location did not offer enough room for the sale to grow in the event of success. As a result, the SCC has decided to put this idea on hold until the new arena/convention centre in Moose Jaw becomes a reality. Marketers can strike this off their “possibly to do” list for 2010.
03. New Staff at SCC
Once again, Donna is escaping the Saskatchewan winter by travelling to Mexico. During the 10 weeks that she is away, her place will be filled by Dee Gibson.
Feel free to drop by the Gallery to welcome Dee into Saskatchewan’s Craft family.
04. Gardenscape
The SCC will once again be operating a booth at Gardenscape in Saskatoon this March – hopefully bigger, more visible, and even more successful than last year.
We will be looking for work appropriate that would be of interest to gardeners and others who like to make their yards beautiful and unique. To sign up, email Chris images of the work you’d like us to display and sell, your retail price of this work, and an estimate of how many you can provide of each piece. A 40% commission will be applied on sales.
In addition to the SCC booth, some members have successfully operated their own booths at this event. If you are considering doing so, talk to Chris. He can relay some experiences at this event, as well as work to ensure that craft producers are clustered together in order to create a critical mass capable of competing with John Deere for attention. Contact Chris by Dec 22 in order to have your space booked as part of the SCC booth and save $100 on your booth fee.
05. Craft as a Vehicle for Spiritual Exploration
The Saskatchewan Craft Council is accepting proposals from Saskatchewan craftspeople for an exhibition exploring spiritual concerns in the creation of Fine Craft. This exhibition will open at the SCC Gallery in Saskatoon and tour the province. Plans are to extend the tour beyond Saskatchewan as well. The curators are Lorne Calvert, Principal of St. Andrew’s College and Leslie Potter, Exhibition & Education Coordinator for the SCC.
Craftspeople and artists have explored spiritual concerns and used religious iconography throughout the ages, resulting in powerful movements within some societies and even influencing political climates. We are interested in examining what is currently happening within this province – all craft media, any style, and any subject.
The exhibition is open to anyone living in Saskatchewan who is engaged in an art and/or craft practice which expresses spiritual concerns. This includes makers who want to explore outside their usual parameters. Submissions should include up to 10 digital images or slides of recent work, an artist bio and c. v. and a written description of proposed work or actual image(s).
The deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm, October 31, 2010. Mail CD/slides and hard copy to:

06. A Traditions/SCC Challenge
bi -
1.
a combining form meaning “twice,” “two,” used in the formation of compound words: bifacial; bifarious.
Functional:
having or serving a utilitarian purpose; capable of serving the purpose for which it was designed: functional architecture; a chair that is functional as well as decorative.
The Saskatchewan Craft Council and Traditions Handcraft Gallery are challenging the imagination and creativity of craft people with a bi-functional craft contest and exhibition.
We are looking for innovative pieces of craft that serve at least two separate and distinct functions. Cheating is not allowed. For example:
- One function cannot simply be decorative or aesthetic appeal – it is just assumed that the craft object will look good.
- The functions must be distinct – a mug does not serve two functions because it can hold both coffee and tea.
Entries should be delivered to the Traditions Handcraft Gallery (2714 - 13th Avenue, Regina) or the SCC Gallery(813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) by Friday, March 12, 2010. Entries or digital images of entries that arrive before the deadline may receive extra publicity as part of a “build-up” for the completion. Collaborative entries are welcomed.
All entries that meet the bi-functional criteria (or tri-function, etc) will be displayed in Traditions for a two week period, with a “people’s choice” ballot for the best piece. The winner of this people’s choice vote will win a prize of $500 cash, plus a one-day shopping spree at Traditions Handcraft Gallery for up to $500 worth of Saskatchewan's best Fine Craft.
It is desirable (but not mandatory) that entries be “for sale” while the contest is running. A commission of 40% on any sales will be charged by Traditions.
For more information contact Amanda at 306.569.0199 (traditions@sasktel.net) or Mark at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 (scc.director@sasktel.net).
07. Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft
In 2010, the Craft Councils from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are joining forces to create a special juried exhibition called Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft. For Saskatchewan, this exhibition will be a temporary, one-year replacement for Dimensions.
A comprehensive call for entries document is now receiving the final touches, and will be issued before the end of the year. However, the key points are that:
- There will be a three person selection committee – one from and nominated by each province.
- Thirty-six pieces will be selected (12 from each province).
- There will be three categories of craft people – emerging (less than five years of practice); mid-career (6 to 15 years of practice) and established (over 15 years of practice). The selection committee will strive to ensure good representation from each category.
- All craft media will be welcomed – pieces can be one of a kind, limited edition or production.
- The initial round of selection will be done on the basis of images and written material. A shortlist of about 45 pieces will be collected for the selection committee to make the final selection on the basis of examination of the actual objects.
- We are beginning the process of seeking corporate donors for awards – and are being very ambitious in our thinking.
- The exhibition will be toured for 3 years to galleries in the prairies, across Canada and internationally.
- The entry deadline will be May 31, 2010.
A few obvious points flow from this. First, the Prairie Excellence exhibition will offer tremendous exposure for those selected. Quite simply, this exhibition will be the greatest exposure vehicle the SCC has ever been involved in creating. Second, the competition will be very tough. Dimensions always has around 35 pieces – Prairie Excellence will have 12 from Saskatchewan. This means that only your very best work will have a chance.
The call for entries brochure will be mailed and posted on the website in short order. Stay tuned for further information on this exciting opportunity.
