01. Shine on Harvest Moon
The SCC is gearing up to launch a new market (Harvest Moon) in Lloydminster on September 12 and 13. There is considerable interest in the Lloydminster area, and this market looks as if it can do very well. HOWEVER we do not yet have enough applications from exhibitors to make this market viable. We are very close to the point of having to either cancel our plans to proceed, or to place non-refundable orders for several thousand dollars in advertising.

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN HARVEST MOON, CONTACT CHRIS by Email, or by phone: 306.653.3616 ext.24) IMMEDIATELY AND GET YOUR APPLICATION IN BY JULY 15. (CLICK HERE FOR PDF) We’d love to proceed with this new market, but can only do so if it desired and supported by marketing members.

03. Traditions Handcraft Gallery
On June 30, the SCC took over ownership of the Traditions Handcraft Gallery in Regina. This is a major initiative for the Craft Council – one with all sorts of exciting possibilities and daunting challenges.

Traditions will be operated by a subsidiary of the SCC (called SCC Enterprises Ltd.) that has it’s own Board of Directors. Initially, the board members are Mark Stobbe, Sherry Luther, Rusty Kurenda, and Megan Hazel. This board will be added to in the near future. The SCC is be the sole shareholder in this business. It will be operated as a free-standing commercial venture. No funds received from the Arts Board or other public agencies will be used in this venture.

Amanda Bosiak has been hired as the manager of Traditions. Many of you will know her from her stints at the SCC. In addition to being an artist and having experience in advertising, she has retail experience including work at Art Placement in Saskatoon. Debb Black has also agreed to continue to work at Traditions under our management.

We will be operating Traditions “as is” through the summer. After Labour Day, the store will be closed temporarily for renovations and refurbishment. We expect this closure to last about two weeks. Following the closure, we will have a “grand re-opening”.

Traditions carry the work of Professional members of the SCC who have successfully been juried to receive marketing status. However, let us be clear. Being a juried professional member of the SCC is a pre-condition to being carried in Traditions. It does not give a right to have work carried. Decisions on who and what get carried will be based on many criteria, including:

  • The overall commercial strategy for the store
  • The mix of work already being stocked
  • The quality of the work
  • The saleability of the work
  • The mix of price points
  • The reliability of supply.

We will be introducing new suppliers into Traditions along with the grand reopening towards the end of September. The next issue of the SCC e-news will have detailed information about what to do if you want your work to be considered for Traditions.

If you have any questions, contact Mark at 653.3616 ext. 27 or scc.director@sasktel.net.

04. Marketing Opportunity
It’s time for Saskatchewan craft producers to start wining. The SCC will be taking a sales booth at the Premier Festival 2009 held at TCU Place in Saskatoon from September 23 to 26th. The event is a showcase and tasting for wine, whiskey and beer. We will be selling any wine related products that you can supply. Possibilities include:

  • Goblets
  • Bottle stoppers
  • Bottle racks and holders
  • Shot glasses
  • Beer steins
  • Jim Gerlinsky’s back yard bottle holders
  • Whatever you come up with

The SCC will be taking a 40% commission on any sales. If you are interested in participating, please send images of what you wish to supply, your retail price, and the volume that you can supply to Chris Jones at scc.memberservices@sasktel.net by August 14th. Orders will be placed by August 21st, with delivery needed by September 18th.

06. Craft producers, Disasters and Insurance
It’s been widely reported that former SCC Board Chair Ken Wilkinson suffered major fire damage to his studio. He believed that his home-owners insurance would cover him for a disaster like this. However, since he was operating a studio, the insurance situation is at best complicated and at worst dismaying.

We believe that many SCC members could be in the same predicament if disaster strikes. As a result, the SCC has been discussing these issues with the Affinity Insurance Services to see if there is a way that a package tailor made for craft studios can be developed by insurers.

Therefore, if you are operating a studio on premises only insured by your home-owners or tenant packages, you very likely are not insured for many aspects of your craft practice.

If you want to both protect yourself and help Affinity work with insurance companies to develop a package for craft producers, please call Glen Hufsmith at 306.242.8822. He will request an appropriate coverage package from several insurance companies. With your permission, he will also use the information gathered to work with the SCC to attempt to get a policy tailored for craft producers.
