The official announcement will be made at Kramer Ltd this Thursday.

4. More Big Fun Auction
It’s been described the craft equivalent of putting Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Marie Currie in a room together – and not letting them out until they’ve invented something. Together. 20 Craft artists and 10 students will be locked up in the Sculpture Studio at the University of Saskatchewan for the May long weekend. Come and see what this collaboration produces at the MBF Auction, Monday, May 18th. Viewing at 6, bidding begins around 7.

5. Summer Job Opening
The SCC has received funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Program to hire a student this summer. Click here for details - please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested and qualified.

6. Dimensions Jury Decisions & The People's Picks
This year, before jury members Chantal Gilbert and Mel Bolen began their intensive two day examination of the 146 entries into Playing with Dimensions, the assembly of entries was open for public viewing. People were given the opportunity to ‘choose their own show” – to pick the 35 pieces they believed should be in Playing with Dimensions. The results have now been tabulated and compared with the juror picks. Every piece entered got at least one vote, and almost all pieces were picked on at least 10% of the ballots. This shows the overall depth and quality of the entries – and the difficult task faced by the jury. At the other end of the scale, no piece was named on every ballot.

We’ve categorized the people’s choices into 4 groups:

  • Majority Picks – named on over 50% of the ballots. There were 15 of these. Of these, 13 were also selected by the jury. Therefore, the jury chose 87% of the pieces that were also chosen by a majority of voters.
  • Strongly Accepted Picks – named on between 33% and 50% of the ballots. There were also 15 pieces in this group – and 6 were also chosen by the jury. Therefore, the jury chose 40% of the pieces selected by between one third and one half of voters.
  • Bubble Picks – named on between 25% and 33% of the ballots. If the show was selected by the public vote, only 5 of these pieces would have been able to be included. All would have been “on the bubble” – there would have been a 10 way tie for the last two spots in the show. Too close to call. There were 13 pieces in this group – and 5 were also chosen by the jury – for a 38% agreement rate with the jury.

Not strongly supported by the public – named on less than 25% of the ballots. There were 103 pieces in this group – of which 11 were selected by the jury – or an 11% selected.

So what does it all mean? First – that every entry had merit. Almost every piece received at least 10% support from the public. Second – the best tends to stand out. Almost 90% of the pieces most admired by the public were chosen by the jury. At the other end of the scale, only 11% of pieces that received less than 25% support were chosen by the jury. Third – the jury has a tough task, and will not please everyone. Not a single ballot was identical to the jury selected show.

The people “picking their own show” had a wide range of craft and artistic training. Some were “greenhorns”. Others were experienced makers. Some were former Dimensions jurors. However, our two jurors did have one thing that was different than anyone else picking. That was time – time to study, reflect and debate.

7. Cheongju Update
Unity and Diversity Exhibition. Almost 500 craft artists submitted work to this competition. The regional juries will be setting to work this week. It promises to be a really good show – one that all Canadian craft people can be proud of.

Cheongju Market place. We’ve received many very good proposals for work in the marketplace. We’re still working on financing and logistical arrangements. For those of you who submitted proposals, bear with us. We’re going as fast as we can on this. Thanks for your patience.

Tour packages. The tour packages organized by the CCF and Mimi Tours are a great deal for a wonderful experience. LINK HERE. Think about going, or pass on the idea to anyone that you think might be interested.

8. GARDENSCAPE
Our first experience at Saskatoon’s Gardenscape March 27-29 was a great learning experience and reasonably successful from a marketing standpoint with gross sales of just over $2,000. The weather was warm and sunny bringing out thousands of people who were thinking about being outdoors. Huge display of yard and garden tractors, hot tubs and garden landscaping dominated the floor of the market but our corner booth set-up from the recently retired Dave Collins gave our display a solid professional look. We set up across the aisle from a mega-booth featuring the work of Don Pell and Mike Saretsky so we had a strong SCC presence. New member Jeannette Lussier was down the aisle and Steven Girard/Shon Profit were also nearby. We talked about joining together for 2010 to establish the size of booth display that will match the size of the large commercial displays. I spent many hours talking to countless shoppers and learned how tiring it is to be on your feet for 12 hours at a time much to the delight of the other SCC members. Anyone interested in joining this effort next year should get in touch with Chris at the office.

9. Food and the SCC Executive Director - Call for Recipes

In 1992, the person who is now the Executive Director of the SCC went to New York city on a provincial trade mission. The opposition in the Legislature was criticizing the trip, and demanded to know what Mark Stobbe was doing in New York. It was explained that he was attending meetings, doing things like helping to sell Saskatchewan pasta.

Bill Boyd, the member from Kindersley demanded to know, "And just what does Mr. Stobbe know about pasta?"

Premier Romanow replied, "Are you kidding - have you never seen the guy!"

The point is, Stobbe knows food. And he knows that Saskatchewan craft people are amongst the best cooks in the world. That's one reason he likes the job so much. He believes it is time to share this culinary knowledge - Please send your favourite recipes in to the SCC Cookbook Project.

Just e-mail them to saskcraftcouncil@sasktel.net. And you can write a short statement about you, your craft, or your food.

For the next 30 years, the U of S was a producer of a wide range of ceramics products. Examples of this work is being sought by Duff Spafford, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Political Studies. The U of S ceramics can be identified by being stamped with “University of Sask. Ceramic Dept.” Or “Made from Saskatchewan Clay”. In some cases, the University’s coat of Arms will also be on the piece. If you have a piece of this ceramics work, or come across one, please let Professor Spafford know at spafford@duke.usask.ca
