01. Christmas Open Studios
Are you having a Christmas Open Studio? The SCC would like to help promote your pre-Christmas studio open house on our website and other means. If you are holding one, please let us know:

  • When?
  • Where?
  • What will be happening?

Send the information to Mark at scc.director@sasktel.net. Please note the more advance notice we get, the better we can help you to publicize your open studio.

02. Why send in your information for the SCC Membership Directory?
In about a week, we’ll be turning on the new Membership Directory for SCC members. Particularly for professional members, here’s why you should have your information on the site:

  • For those of you without your own website, it’s a quick and cheap (i.e. free) way to get a basic internet presence.
  • For those of you with your own website, it’s a quick and cheap (i.e. free) way to help drive traffic to your site.

A good looking internet presence generates exposure and sales that you may not even be able to attribute to the site. For example, a month ago, an event organizer was looking for a goblet maker to supply 16 goblets. She looked on the Fine Craft Guide and reached a decision based on those who had pictures of goblets there. The member who was on the site with goblets got the $300+ order – those that were not did not get considered. It was that simple.

On another occasion, I was talking to a gallery owner who was expressing frustration about securing a particular type of blown glass product. I pitched a producer as a supplier. The gallery owner was interested, and said she’d look them up on the internet. They had no internet presence, and so lost a potential gallery sales venue.

The point is this. Having a good looking, internet presence can generate sales. Just as significantly, not having any presence can cost you sales. And when people are looking for something specific, they often “comparison shop” on sites like the old Fine Craft Guide or the new Membership Directory. If you are not up, you are not considered.

03. WINTERGREEN Fine Craft Market: November 13-15
The Wintergreen Fine Craft Market is back at the Conexus Arts Centre, Regina, from November 13 to 15 with top quality craft for Christmas presents or personal enjoyment.

“Members of both the British and Thai Royal Families own work made by artists at Wintergreen,” said Chris Jones, Member Services Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Craft Council (SCC). “At least two winners of Academy Awards also own Saskatchewan Craft from people at Wintergreen.”

“But the great thing is, you don’t have to be royalty or a movie star to get great craft. We’ve got something for every one at every price level,” Jones said. “And if it is good enough for royalty, it’s good enough to give to your mother.”

Visitors to Wintergreen will be able to participate in a Wintergreen Treasure Hunt. The winner will receive a $200 gift certificate from the Traditions Handcraft Gallery.

04. Crafted With Pleasure - Traditions featured in the Leader Post
Irene Seiberling, The Leader-Post
Published: Saturday, October 24, 2009

Where's the best selection of Saskatchewan Fine Crafts? According to the executive director of the Saskatchewan Craft Council, Traditions Handcraft Gallery in Regina wins hands down. "There are other galleries and stores that sell some Saskatchewan craft, but I am confident in saying this is the best array of Saskatchewan craft that you'll find in the province," Mark Stobbe said in a telephone interview from his Saskatoon office.

VACLAV SLADEK (MAY 16, 1942 OCTOBER 16, 2009) Vaclav was born in Prague, Czech Republic in 1942. He left his birth place in 1981 in search of a better life for his children and himself. He arrived in Canada in March 1982 with his three children, Gabriela, Vaclav Jr., and Martin. Vaclav was best known for his never-ending sense of humor which he used to share his happiness with all those who surrounded him. Somehow, even in the most of serious situations, he always found something to laugh about. Vaclav was also known for his artistic talent and the creation of his one of a kind marionettes which he sold at craft shows throughout North America. Vaclav had a self-proclaimed good life, his greatest joys included traveling, building a cabin at Turtle Lake, and spending time with his family and friends. Vaclav will be deeply missed and forever loved by all those who were close to him and loved him dearly, especially Louise, Cristy, Tyler, Gabriela, Vaclav Jr., and Martin.

September 23 to November 1st, 2009 at the Chapel Gallery. Reception date is October 24, 2009 at 7:00 pm.

The Allen Sapp Gallery and Chapel Gallery, of North Battleford, SK, wish to announce the opening of a significant and timely exhibition. Inspired by the Land is a unique and dynamic exhibition, which brings together the work of over twenty contributors whose work challenges us to rethink our present understanding of the land. Artists, writers, elders and scientists from across western Canada explore their visions, hopes and fears on matters that range from sustainable development, First Nation traditional views of land and the role of art and artists on matters of the land.

This multi media, multi disciplinary exhibition combines traditional media with synchronized multi screen installation with 5.1 sound around.

It is a feast for the senses involving a combination of paintings, crystal mounted photography, soundscapes and video. The First Nations traditional cultural installations offer insights into the healing power of the land and permit us to see, touch and smell plant preparations drawn from the land.

This exhibition curated by Dean Bauche (Director of Allen Sapp Gallery) includes “inspired work” by the following contributors; Elders, Judy Bear and Wes Fine Day; Photographers, Richard Baschak and Courtney Milne; Writers, Sharon Butala and Trevor Herriot; Painters, Allen Sapp and Jean E. Sonmor; Scientist, Glenn Sutter; Soundscape, Charles Fox; Editing, Angela Edmunds; Music, Electric Skychurch; Poet, Ovide Mercredi; Beadwork, Marcia Chickness; Sculptors, Noelle Lucas, Lyndon Tootoosis, and Darwin Atcheynum; Birch Bark Biting, Angelique Merasty; and Baskets, Margaret Naytowhow.
