01. EMMA 2010
EMMA 2010 will be held from July 26 to August 2 at the Ness Creek Festival site. This year, EMMA is going “unplugged”. No electricity will be used in the production of the work.

EMMA is an invitational event, with craft artists drawn from across Canada, the United States, and around the world. Participants are chosen to create a balance of media and skill level. In all cases, energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to work collaboratively are essential.

If you would like to be considered for an invitation to EMMA 2010, send an e-mail to Trent Watts by October 23rd. This e-mail should include a short outline of your work as a craft producer, and a short (50 word maximum) statement as to why you want to attend.

View preliminary information about EMMA 2010 on the EMMA website...

02. Membership Directory
We’ve received the information needed for the new membership directory [click here for description of needs] from about 5 dozen members. This directory will be posted on the SCC website by the end of October. Quite simply, if we do not have your information and images, you will not be listed. This will mean you are depriving yourself of a valuable exposure opportunity.

Having your page in this directory does not cost you a penny – it is part of the benefits that you receive for being a member of the SCC. Act today.

SCC GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
01. Current Exhibition
02. Upcoming Exhibition

01. CURRENT EXHIBITION:

INDUCTION: Recent Works by Mel Bolen – Ceramics works supported by Saskatchewan Arts Board grant and influenced by EMMA 2008. October 9 – November 22, 2009.

Public Reception: Friday, October 9, from 7:00 to 9:00pm, at the SCC Gallery in Saskatoon.

Mel Bolen’s new ceramic works are strong, sculptural vessels with sensuous altered shapes and luscious surfaces. In 2008, Bolen attended the Emma Collaboration, a symposium of artists and craftspeople from all over the world, spending several intensive days collaborating in the making of objects. Through creative induction, the energy from that experience is reflected in his new shapes and textures.

Bolen says of the work for this exhibition, that a Saskatchewan Arts Board Grant gave him “… the greatest gift an artist can receive – the luxury of time to create… Time for reflection and thought to concentrate on form, surface, simplicity and placement in the kiln. Time to ponder, take a walk, come back with fresh eyes.”

Curator, Leslie Potter, says “Mel Bolen manipulates clay with the history of the medium at his fingertips. His skill at the wheel and his unique altering techniques induce us into a world of wonder at the creative capacity of clay in the hands of a master.”

Bolen’s response to appreciation of his work is “Clay continues to amaze me and after forty years I think I’m beginning to understand it.”
