The pre-opening social will be at the store tonight (Friday) from 5:30 to 9:00pm. Please drop by 2714 13th Avenue in Regina if you can. The official grand opening will be tomorrow (Saturday, April 26).

Thank you to all the members who helped out with the renovations, and to Amanda, Anne, Claire and Deb for their very hard work over the past month.

02. Senior Canadian Artists
Senior Artists' Research Project: Survey and town hall discussions launched.

If you are an artist and 60 or over, please participate in this action-oriented research project about artists in all disciplines. The influential group of Canadian arts organizations listed below is looking for ways to do more to support Canada’s senior artists (that is, those who are 65 and over). We need your help! Please assist us by participating in this first-ever assessment of the situation and needs of senior artists in Canada. We invite artists 60 and over to participate in a survey and “town hall” discussions about their needs and interests in areas such as artistic activity, health care, housing, retirement, financial issues, community connections and social networks. The survey of the situation and needs of senior artists is available at www.seniorartists.ca. The dates and locations of the town hall sessions are listed below. The arts organizations will use this information while working to improve current services or establish new services for artists in Canada. Your input will help us design services that best meet artists’ needs and interests. We cannot design services without the input and suggestions of as many senior artists as possible! Joysanne Sidimus is the Project Director for the Senior Artists Research Project. Joysanne can be reached at sarproject@sympatico.ca. The research is being conducted by Hill Strategies Research. You can contact Kelly Hill of Hill Strategies at kelly@hillstrategies.com or 1.877.445.5494. Thanks! And please spread the word to other artists you know.

The Senior Artists’ Research Project wishes to thank its funders, including the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the McLean Foundation, the Canada Council for the Arts, Lynda Hamilton, Sandra and Jim Pitblado, and many other private individuals. Additional contributions or donations would be gratefully accepted!

03. PST for Craft Producers
We asked the provincial Ministry of Finance about the obligation of craft producers to collect and remit PST. Click here to read the PDF reply.

04. Attention Wintergreen Marketers
We are gearing up to write this year’s Wintergreen tabloid. For the past two years, the focus has been “new” and “different”. The editorial content has centered around people new to Wintergreen. Things change this year.

To meet the challenge of “Our Best to You,” being held on the same weekend, we are stressing quality. Part of the content of the tabloid (and perhaps some other advertising) will consist of short profiles of marketers who have:

  • Won awards recently
  • Shown in prestigious galleries
  • Sold in different venues that would be seen as prestigious.

Could you let us know by e-mailing scc.director@sasktel.net.

In addition... If you have work in the hands of someone famous, please let us know. We’d love to promote the fact that your work was chosen to give to the Queen on her last visit, or was bought by Robert Redford. Pictures of them with the piece would be very welcomed.

05. Congratulations Tom!!!
ACC Executive Director and Curator, Tom McFall, was presented with the 2009 Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management.

“The Rozsa Award is simply amazing” says Mr. McFall. “Personally, it provides a huge acknowledgement and validation for much of my career. For the Alberta Craft Council, it's board and staff members, and it's entire membership, the award also confirms the rightness of their vision and hard work. I expect that, for everyone involved with the Craft Council, especially as it enters its 30th anniversary year, this award will offer a surge of new energy. My colleagues and I intend to capitalize on every opportunity that might come from the award to expand the activity of the Craft Council, to increase the profile of the professional craft arts in Alberta, and to support individual craft artists’ careers.”

For more information, check out the article in the Calgary Herald, or visit the website: www.rozsafoundation.org.

Emma was a charter member of Saskatchewan Craft Council, and served a term on the SCC Board. Our province should be very proud of the work she did to bring her vision of beauty and excellence to the public. She created beautiful art for the world to enjoy (ceramic flowers - prairie lilies, crocus). The world is a more beautiful place because of the standards she set and the role she played.
