“If I were asked to say what is at once the most important production of Art and the thing most to be longed for; I should answer; A beautiful House; and if I were further asked to name the production next in importance and the thing next to be longed for; I should answer; A beautiful Book. To enjoy good houses and good books in self-respect and decent comfort, seems to me to be the pleasurable end towards which all societies of human beings ought now to struggle.” William Morris

01. March Jury Session

Potential marketing members are reminded that the application deadline for the Annual Jury Session is March 1. For more information contact Chris Jones - scc.memberservices@sasktel.net.

02. Spring is around the corner!

The days are getting longer. That means spring is around the corner. Thousands of Saskatchewan people are itching to get their hands dirty in the soil. For craft artists, that means sales opportunities. The SCC will be using the garden season to create two market opportunities. One is targeted at the retail market of gardeners – the other is going after wholesale and commissioned sales.

Gardenscape (Saskatoon): We will be operating an SCC Booth at Gardenscape again this year. This massive gardening trade show runs from March 26 to 28. We will be selling garden related craft on a consignment basis (40% commission).

Garden Products Wholesale Show: The SCC will be operating a small wholesale trade show targeted specifically at greenhouse operators, landscape designers, landscapers, retailers and other industry professionals. This three day event will run from April 8 to 10. Anything sold “off the floor” will be charged a 40% commission. If the trade show generates wholesale orders or commissions, a 10% commission/finders fee will be assessed. The Garden Products Wholesale Show offers the opportunity to develop long-term wholesale relationships with those in the gardening and yard service industry. This show is also an ideal opportunity for makers of larger work (furniture and sculptural pieces) that we cannot fit into the Gardenscape sales booth.

For more information on either event, Contact Chris at 306.653.3616 ext. 24 Or email: scc.memberservices@sasktel.net.

03. Bi-Functional

The entry deadline for the Bi-Functional Craft contest is on March 12. It's your chance to win $500 cash and a $500 shopping spree at Traditions Handcraft Gallery. Remember, the entry must be a crafted object that serves two separate and distinct functions. Aesthetic appeal does not count as one.

We recently received these images [click here] inquiring whether it would qualify. On the basis of bi-functionality, it certainly does. However, arguements can be made that (a) it is not hand crafted, and (b) it won't fit into Traditions. We love the combination of cleaning wheat and cleaning roads as functions, but....

We know SCC members can do better.

04. Lasting Forever

Liz Robertson is an assistant professor in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Saskatchewan. Her background includes a Master’s of Art Conservation from Queen’s University, and her subsequent work in conservation has focused on the treatment and characterization of archaeological and ethnographic objects.

Lasting Forever will be held at the SCC Gallery (813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) on Wednesday, February 17th from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Bring good questions and deep thoughts. Admission is free. Download PDF Poster...

05. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft

Some of our early communication for Prairie Excellence stated that the entry deadline would be May 31st, 2010. Please note that this ENTRY DEADLINE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MAY 3. We apologize for any inconvenience that this change may have caused you.

The attached brochure (click here) outlines how Prairie Excellence will be selected, by whom, and how to enter. All of the information you require should be in this – if you have any other questions about HOW to participate, give Mark a call at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@sasktel.net.

03. Call for Proposals – Placemaker Program 2010

Purpose: The Urban Design Section of the City of Saskatoon is pleased to invite applications for its Placemaker Program at various locations in Saskatoon’s Downtown, Broadway, and Riversdale Business Improvement Districts and River Landing. The Placemaker Program supports approximately 20 installations annually, and the City anticipates the selection of up to 5 pieces for an installation period of three (3) years from Autumn 2010 to Autumn 2013.

Introduction: The goal of the Placemaker Program is to enhance civic spaces through public art. Public art refers to artwork that has been planned and executed in the public domain, in any media, that is outside and accessible to all. Artists are requested to respond to the sites and take into account the physical, cultural or historical contexts.

Background: The Urban Design Section initiated the Placemaker Program in 1994. The Program applies to the geographic areas lying within the Business Improvement Districts mentioned above. The intent of the Program is to provide an effective way to:

  • Enhance the visual appeal of public spaces
  • Provide a focal point or public landmark and create a sense of place
  • Encourage and showcase Saskatchewan and Canadian artists
  • Build public and corporate awareness for opportunities to include art in public spaces
  • Promote cultural development and encourage public appreciation of the visual arts

The Urban Design Section invites any artist to submit an application to this program. Applications may be submitted for either a completed work in the artist’s possession or for proposed new work. The City of Saskatoon Visual Arts Placement Jury adjudicates the applications and selects the works to be exhibited in consultation with representatives from each of the Business Improvement Districts and the Urban Design Section.

07. HRSDC opens EI Special Benefits to the Self-Employed

In a press release issued just before Christmas, the federal government announced that Royal Assent has been given to the Fairness for the Self-Employed Act.

This is legislation that the cultural sector has been pressing for, for many years. Self-employed Canadians will be able to voluntarily opt into the EI program effective January 31, 2010, in order to take advantage of the EI special benefits. "Special benefits provided to self-employed individuals will mirror those currently available to salaried employees under the EI program."

Regulations are still being written, but the commitment has been made and the option for the self-employed to access a social security net as do employees will soon be in place. "Self employed Canadians who choose to take advantage of EI special benefits will be required to opt into the program at least one year prior to claiming benefits, and will be responsible for making premium payments for the tax year in which they apply to the program. [...] As a transitional measure those who register on or before April 1, 2010, will be able to collect benefits as early as January 1, 2011."

As of January 31, 2010, it will be possible to register with the EI program through the Service Canada website.
