01. Studio Tour Alert

During the spring and summer, many SCC members participate in regional studio/art tours events. We’d like to help with publicizing these events on our website and by generating some articles for magazines that highlight this activity.

We’d like to get this up on the website soon, and will need information asap to generate magazine articles in time for publication deadlines. Therefore, could you e-mail a PDF of your region’s tour promotional brochure to Colin at colin@integrityimages.ca. If there is no brochure as yet, please send Colin an e-mail with the following information:

  • Name of tour
  • Dates
  • List of participating artists and the type of work they do (e.g. ceramics, glass, painting, etc).
  • Contact information

02. Market Access Program

The Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership has a new Market Access Program (MAP) that might be of assistance to craft artists interested in trying to build a market presence in new international markets. MAP is a program designed to support the domestic and international marketing efforts of STEP regular members. Funds are available to assist companies in entering new markets, new market sectors or new market segments outside of Saskatchewan. Financial assistance is available to support costs to participate in trade shows, trade events or trade missions.

If this is of interest, call Mark at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 or email: scc.director@sasktel.net to discuss the specifics of this program and whether this program could be of assistance to you.

03. Swimming Pools, Movie Stars

If you’ve got any inclination to attempt making sales in the Los Angeles area, the Canadian Consulate has prepared a guide to marketing art in LA, click here to view... It’s a big market – certainly not for everyone – but this is a good roadmap to start the trip. Make sure to bring along the Flatt and Scruggs music.

04. March Jury Session

Potential marketing members are reminded that the application deadline for the Annual Jury Session is March 1. For more information contact Chris Jones.

05. Bi-Functional

The entry deadline for the Bi-Functional Craft contest is on March 12. It's your chance to win $500 cash and a $500 shopping spree at Traditions Handcraft Gallery. Remember, the entry must be a crafted object that serves two separate and distinct functions. Aesthetic appeal does not count as one.

We recently received these images [click here] inquiring whether it would qualify. On the basis of bi-functionality, it certainly does. However, arguements can be made that (a) it is not hand crafted, and (b) it won't fit into Traditions. We love the combination of cleaning wheat and cleaning roads as functions, but... We know SCC members can do better.

06. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft

Some of our early communication for Prairie Excellence stated that the entry deadline would be May 31st, 2010. Please note that this ENTRY DEADLINE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MAY 3. We apologize for any inconvenience that this change may have caused you.

The attached brochure (click here) outlines how Prairie Excellence will be selected, by whom, and how to enter. All of the information you require should be in this – if you have any other questions about HOW to participate, give Mark a call at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@sasktel.net.

01. Overcoming Shyness

Too Shy to Sell? To be successful, Craft artists have to do two things:

  1. Make Great Stuff
  2. Sell it

Let’s face it, selling can be tough. You are meeting new people at places like markets, and trying to engage. It’s not easy. There’s more. Most craft artists set out to be craft artists, not sales people. Most feel more at home in the studio than on the market sales floor.

HELP IS AT HAND!

Toastmasters International has been helping people feel more comfortable in speaking and public interaction since 1924. They’ve helped millions of shy people become more confident in public. The SCC has enlisted Toastmaster’s to help you. If you feel awkward and uncomfortable in settings such as craft markets, the “Too Shy to Sell?” session is for you. If you do “okay” at markets, but want to do better, the “Too Shy to Sell?” session is also for you.

It’s a unique opportunity to learn from the best – from around the world.

Registration will be limited to the first 100 – act now to avoid disappointment – the Symposium is almost half sold out already. Click here for the registration brochure.

This workshop will discuss some concrete strategies for creating balance, some simple ways to maximize studio time, scheduling strategies, how studio set-up impacts creative efficiency, and some of Heather Cline’s hard-learned lessons in time management.

05. Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics and The RBC Award for Glass

With the on-going generosity of Ms. Winifred Shantz and RBC Foundation, the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery present these awards for early career practicing glass and ceramic artists that have been working professionally for between 5 to 10 years. Intended to allow the artist to undertake a period of independent research, or other activities with the capacity to advance their artistic and professional practice at a key moment in the artist’s career, winners of the RBC Award for Glass receive $7,000 and winners of the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics receive $10,000.

The selection panels are comprised of experienced contemporary glass and ceramic artists and curators. A jury of respected artists and professionals associated with the silica arts will choose a finalist list. This year’s winners will be announced at a gala event on September 16, 2010.

Our most recent Winifred Shantz Award recipient will travel to Mexico to participate in residency at La Ceiba Graphica, then meeting local potters and artists in Xalapa, finally travelling to villages in Oaxaca province (a region well known for ceramics and other traditional crafts). Our RBC Award recipient is exploring the hidden landscapes of Toronto. This research will culminate in a solo exhibition in 2010 at the Wall Space Gallery in Ottawa.

To apply to either of these awards, you must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You must also meet the definition of a professional artist. The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery and the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics is accessible to Aboriginal artists and artists of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

06. Make parking your bike a beautiful thing

We are inviting artists to submit sketches to a competition being held by Road Map Saskatoon, We Are Many (WAM), and the City of Saskatoon. The competition’s goal is to provide attractive and functional bicycle parking that will bring cyclists into commercial districts and contribute to people-friendly spaces.

We intend to install bike racks throughout three communities in Saskatoon and hope that these bike racks can provide a visual symbol of Saskatoon’s commitment to becoming a sustainable, vibrant, and creative city. In order to make this happen we need input from our local artists, sculptors, and designers.

The goal is to commission five to ten designs that will be used to create at least 15 bike racks. More bike racks may be commissioned pending increased funding from the City of Saskatoon. Sketches will be chosen by a panel composed of members of the art community as well as the Saskatoon Cycling Advisory Group. Each chosen design will be commissioned from the artist at a price of $400. Designs will be chosen based both on artistic merit as well as the functionality of the design as a bike rack.

Sketches will be accepted until March 6, 2010. Please contact us to obtain an information package with more details about this project and how to submit a sketch. We encourage you to distribute this invitation to other local artists who would be interested in this project.

For more information contact Amber Jones with Road Map Saskatoon at ajones@meewasin.com or 306.665.6887, and please refer to the attached press release.

07. The Cultural Exchange

Artists working in any arts discipline are invited to submit workshop proposals to the Cultural Exhange for it's 28th Workshop Tour. Successful applicants must be willing to travel to Saskatchewan schools for an eight-week period starting in September 2010. Artists travel as a troupe of 5 throughout rural Saskatchewan as far north as Isle la Crosse to as far south as Coranach. Compensation is based on dates of presentation with compensation for travel time. Artists are guaranteed 26 dates over an 8 week period. Workshop delivery fee is $300.00 per day of workshop plus per diems. An additional per diem is paid for travel days of 8 hours or 5 hours.

Please submit a resume and a brief outline of a workshop in your area of specialty that you could present, in an adaptable fifty-minute format, to school age youth: kindergarten to grade 12. Electronic submissions are acceptable or you may fax to 306.780.9487 or send via the mail. Please check out the most recent workshop tour blog for more information at http://scesworkshoptour.blogspot.com. Deadline February 26, 2010.

08. Call for Proposals – Placemaker Program 2010

Purpose: The Urban Design Section of the City of Saskatoon is pleased to invite applications for its Placemaker Program at various locations in Saskatoon’s Downtown, Broadway, and Riversdale Business Improvement Districts and River Landing. The Placemaker Program supports approximately 20 installations annually, and the City anticipates the selection of up to 5 pieces for an installation period of three (3) years from Autumn 2010 to Autumn 2013.

Introduction: The goal of the Placemaker Program is to enhance civic spaces through public art. Public art refers to artwork that has been planned and executed in the public domain, in any media, that is outside and accessible to all. Artists are requested to respond to the sites and take into account the physical, cultural or historical contexts.

Background: The Urban Design Section initiated the Placemaker Program in 1994. The Program applies to the geographic areas lying within the Business Improvement Districts mentioned above. The intent of the Program is to provide an effective way to:

  • Enhance the visual appeal of public spaces
  • Provide a focal point or public landmark and create a sense of place
  • Encourage and showcase Saskatchewan and Canadian artists
  • Build public and corporate awareness for opportunities to include art in public spaces
  • Promote cultural development and encourage public appreciation of the visual arts

The Urban Design Section invites any artist to submit an application to this program. Applications may be submitted for either a completed work in the artist’s possession or for proposed new work. The City of Saskatoon Visual Arts Placement Jury adjudicates the applications and selects the works to be exhibited in consultation with representatives from each of the Business Improvement Districts and the Urban Design Section.
