01. Gardenscape
The SCC will once again be operating a booth at Gardenscape in Saskatoon this March – hopefully bigger, more visible, and even more successful than last year.
We will be looking for work appropriate that would be of interest to gardeners and others who like to make their yards beautiful and unique. To sign up, email Chris images of the work you’d like us to display and sell, your retail price of this work, and an estimate of how many you can provide of each piece. A 40% commission will be applied on sales.
02. Craft as a Vehicle for Spiritual Exploration
The Saskatchewan Craft Council is accepting proposals from Saskatchewan craftspeople for an exhibition exploring spiritual concerns in the creation of Fine Craft. This exhibition will open at the SCC Gallery in Saskatoon and tour the province. Plans are to extend the tour beyond Saskatchewan as well. The curators are Lorne Calvert, Principal of St. Andrew’s College and Leslie Potter, Exhibition & Education Coordinator for the SCC.
Craftspeople and artists have explored spiritual concerns and used religious iconography throughout the ages, resulting in powerful movements within some societies and even influencing political climates. We are interested in examining what is currently happening within this province – all craft media, any style, and any subject.
The exhibition is open to anyone living in Saskatchewan who is engaged in an art and/or craft practice which expresses spiritual concerns. This includes makers who want to explore outside their usual parameters. Submissions should include up to 10 digital images or slides of recent work, an artist bio and c. v. and a written description of proposed work or actual image(s).
The deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm, October 31, 2010. Mail CD/slides and hard copy to:

03. A Traditions/SCC Challenge
bi -
1.
a combining form meaning “twice,” “two,” used in the formation of compound words: bifacial; bifarious.
Functional:
having or serving a utilitarian purpose; capable of serving the purpose for which it was designed: functional architecture; a chair that is functional as well as decorative.
The Saskatchewan Craft Council and Traditions Handcraft Gallery are challenging the imagination and creativity of craft people with a bi-functional craft contest and exhibition.
We are looking for innovative pieces of craft that serve at least two separate and distinct functions. Cheating is not allowed. For example:
- One function cannot simply be decorative or aesthetic appeal – it is just assumed that the craft object will look good.
- The functions must be distinct – a mug does not serve two functions because it can hold both coffee and tea.
Entries should be delivered to the Traditions Handcraft Gallery (2714 - 13th Avenue, Regina) or the SCC Gallery(813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) by Friday, March 12, 2010. Entries or digital images of entries that arrive before the deadline may receive extra publicity as part of a “build-up” for the completion. Collaborative entries are welcomed.
All entries that meet the bi-functional criteria (or tri-function, etc) will be displayed in Traditions for a two week period, with a “people’s choice” ballot for the best piece. The winner of this people’s choice vote will win a prize of $500 cash, plus a one-day shopping spree at Traditions Handcraft Gallery for up to $500 worth of Saskatchewan's best Fine Craft.
It is desirable (but not mandatory) that entries be “for sale” while the contest is running. A commission of 40% on any sales will be charged by Traditions.

04. Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft
For three decades, Dimensions has been one of the signature activities of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. It has contributed to the fostering of excellence amongst craft people, and greatly enhanced the recognition of Fine Craft in Saskatchewan.
In 2010, Dimensions will be replaced for one year by a new, three province exhibition called Prairie Excellence. This exhibition will contain work from 12 craft artists from each of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. It is being organized as a collaborative effort by these three Craft Councils.
The attached brochure (click here) outlines how Prairie Excellence will be selected, by whom, and how to enter. All of the information you require should be in this – if you have any other questions about HOW to participate, give Mark a call at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@sasktel.net.
Since the SCC Board decided to proceed with Prairie Excellence, there have been a number of questions raised by members as to what this means. Some of them are likely on your mind as well – so here’s the answers.
Is this the end of Dimensions?
No. We are assembling Prairie Excellence instead of Dimensions in 2010. Dimensions will be back in 2011.
Is Prairie Excellence a one-time deal?
We don’t know. If we get good sponsorship and gallery support – if the prizes are big and the exposure great, we’ll likely do it again in three years. If not, we won’t.
Why go interprovincial?
By going Interprovincial, we can create an exhibition that has more “OOMPH” – that is capable of attracting more attention than a single province show. With Prairie Excellence, we are already assured of gallery venues in Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg as well as our traditional Saskatchewan locations. From this Prairie base, we will be working to go National and International.
How is it being funded?
The three craft councils have re-directed money to make Prairie Excellence possible. We are approaching corporations and granting agencies for prize money.
Why doesn’t the SCC participate in Prairie Excellence as well as still doing Dimensions in 2010?
There are three reasons:
- Money
- Other resources such as staff time
- Money
Dimensions gave exposure and opportunity to over 30 artists every year in Saskatchewan. This show will benefit only 12. Is this fair?
The 12 artists who have work accepted will have a substantially better exposure opportunity than being in Dimensions. In a very real way, we are making a trade-off between the quality of the opportunity and the volume of opportunities.
There is no question that it will be harder to get into Prairie Excellence than it was to get into Dimensions. We believe that this will raise the bar for people – forcing everyone to really dig in and produce their very best work.
With the reduced number of participants, will new-comers have any chance at all?
The adjudication of Prairie Excellence has been designed to showcase emerging artists, mid-career artists, and established artists. All three groups will have a shot.
Why are there not more artists from every Province?
The number of pieces is designed to produce an optimum sized touring exhibition suitable for the most appropriate galleries. In addition, cost is also a factor.
How much will the Awards and Prizes be?
This will depend on the success of our support for sponsorships, so we cannot say right now. However, we are committed to dramatically increasing the scale of awards for this exhibition. In order to do this, the three Craft Councils will be approaching over 400 potential donors who have already been identified (if you’ve got suggestions, let us know asap) and we are asking for amounts that everyone will agree are significant and precedent setting.
As we obtain sponsorships for particular awards, we will be announcing them. As they used to say on TV – Don’t change this channel!
Who can enter?
Anybody residing in the three Prairie Provinces. Entries for Craft Council members are free – others pay an entry fee.
Entries from each Province will be accepted in any of the craft media recognized by each Provincial Craft Council. This creates a few anomalies that reflect definitional differences from Province to Province. For example, photography from Saskatchewan will be eligible – but not from the other two Provinces.
