01. Lasting Forever
- Ever wonder why some craft objects survive the millennium, and others do not?
- Do you know what your own work will look like in a hundred years? Or a thousand?
- Will your craft give you a kind of immortality, or will it be as fleeting as your life?
- What impact do new materials and methods have on the permanence of your work?
Big questions. For the answers, come to Lasting Forever presented by Dr. Liz Robertson.
Liz Robertson is an assistant professor in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Saskatchewan. Her background includes a Master’s of Art Conservation from Queen’s University, and her subsequent work in conservation has focused on the treatment and characterization of archaeological and ethnographic objects.
Lasting Forever will be held at the SCC Gallery (813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) on Wednesday, February 17th from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Bring good questions and deep thoughts. Admission is free. Download PDF Poster...
02. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prairie Excellence: The Today and Tomorrow of Prairie Craft
Some of our early communication for Prairie Excellence stated that the entry deadline would be May 31st, 2010. Please note that this ENTRY DEADLINE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO MAY 3.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this change may have caused you.
The attached brochure (click here) outlines how Prairie Excellence will be selected, by whom, and how to enter. All of the information you require should be in this – if you have any other questions about HOW to participate, give Mark a call at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 or e-mail at scc.director@sasktel.net.
03. Report from Cheongju, South Korea
Last Fall, Saskatchewan was well represented at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea. Our Province had:
- 11 Craft Artists represented in the Unity and Diversity exhibition of Canadian craft
- 13 Craft Artists selling in the Canadian Boutique at the CICB
- 10 Saskatchewan people travel to Korea to participate in Biennale, and to learn about craft in Korea.
On Wednesday, January 27th you have the opportunity to share in the experience. Saskatchewan representatives who attended the CICB will be presenting an illustrated report to showcase what they saw, learned and experienced. Discover the craft mysteries of the Orient without leaving home. Come to the SCC Gallery at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 27th for an evening you’ll not soon forget.
For more information, contact 306.653.3616 ext. 0.
04. A Tip of the Hat
A tip of the hat goes to Saskatchewan MP’s Ray Boughen (Palliser) and Garry Breitkreuz (Yorkton-Melville) for joining the new All Party Arts Caucus. This group of 10 Conservative, 18 NDP, 6 Liberal and 4 Bloc Quebecois MP’s have joined together in the caucus to meet with arts groups and explore cultural policy in a non-partisan context. It’s great to see that Mr. Boughen and Mr. Breitkreuz have demonstrated their interest in arts and culture by joining this caucus. For more information, click here...
05. Gardenscape
We are still looking for members to participate in Gardenscape this March. To have your work considered for this marketing opportunities, e-mail your images of proposed work (with a garden theme) to Chris at scc.memberservices@sasktel.net.
But there is more on gardens. In early April, we will also be doing a specialized trade show for landscape designers, landscaping companies, greenhouses, and so on. We hope to use the work assembled for Gardenscape to form the core of this trade show – giving you a second marketing opportunity for the same upfront cost as the first one (not a cent). We will also be able to have a wider range of garden work at the trade show, including a limited number of larger sculptural pieces and garden furniture. If we sell work “off the floor” at the trade show, a 40% commission will be charged. If we generate wholesale orders, a 10% finder’s fee will be assessed. For work that you want to be considered for wholesale marketing, in addition to the image and price, we’ll need an estimate of how long it would take to fill orders.
06. A Traditions/SCC Challenge
bi -
1.
a combining form meaning “twice,” “two,” used in the formation of compound words: bifacial; bifarious.
Functional:
having or serving a utilitarian purpose; capable of serving the purpose for which it was designed: functional architecture; a chair that is functional as well as decorative.
The Saskatchewan Craft Council and Traditions Handcraft Gallery are challenging the imagination and creativity of craft people with a bi-functional craft contest and exhibition.
We are looking for innovative pieces of craft that serve at least two separate and distinct functions. Cheating is not allowed. For example:
- One function cannot simply be decorative or aesthetic appeal – it is just assumed that the craft object will look good.
- The functions must be distinct – a mug does not serve two functions because it can hold both coffee and tea.
Entries should be delivered to the Traditions Handcraft Gallery (2714 - 13th Avenue, Regina) or the SCC Gallery(813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) by Friday, March 12, 2010. Entries or digital images of entries that arrive before the deadline may receive extra publicity as part of a “build-up” for the completion. Collaborative entries are welcomed.
All entries that meet the bi-functional criteria (or tri-function, etc) will be displayed in Traditions for a two week period, with a “people’s choice” ballot for the best piece. The winner of this people’s choice vote will win a prize of $500 cash, plus a one-day shopping spree at Traditions Handcraft Gallery for up to $500 worth of Saskatchewan's best Fine Craft.
It is desirable (but not mandatory) that entries be “for sale” while the contest is running. A commission of 40% on any sales will be charged by Traditions.
For more information contact Amanda at 306.569.0199 (traditions@sasktel.net) or Mark at 306.653.3616 ext. 27 (scc.director@sasktel.net).

01. Call for Proposals – Placemaker Program 2010
Purpose: The Urban Design Section of the City of Saskatoon is pleased to invite applications for its Placemaker Program at various locations in Saskatoon’s Downtown, Broadway, and Riversdale Business Improvement Districts and River Landing. The Placemaker Program supports approximately 20 installations annually, and the City anticipates the selection of up to 5 pieces for an installation period of three (3) years from Autumn 2010 to Autumn 2013.
Introduction: The goal of the Placemaker Program is to enhance civic spaces through public art. Public art refers to artwork that has been planned and executed in the public domain, in any media, that is outside and accessible to all. Artists are requested to respond to the sites and take into account the physical, cultural or historical contexts.
Background: The Urban Design Section initiated the Placemaker Program in 1994. The Program applies to the geographic areas lying within the Business Improvement Districts mentioned above. The intent of the Program is to provide an effective way to:
- Enhance the visual appeal of public spaces
- Provide a focal point or public landmark and create a sense of place
- Encourage and showcase Saskatchewan and Canadian artists
- Build public and corporate awareness for opportunities to include art in public spaces
- Promote cultural development and encourage public appreciation of the visual arts
The Urban Design Section invites any artist to submit an application to this program. Applications may be submitted for either a completed work in the artist’s possession or for proposed new work. The City of Saskatoon Visual Arts Placement Jury adjudicates the applications and selects the works to be exhibited in consultation with representatives from each of the Business Improvement Districts and the Urban Design Section.

02. Upcoming Exhibition
01. CURRENT EXHIBITION:
"Northern Craft - The Robertson Trading Collection" – Private collection of First Nations work.
January 15 – February 21, 2010.
SHOW OPENING
The First Nations Craft exhibition featuring work from the Robertson’s Trading Post and from students and staff at Oskayak High School will have the official opening tonight. (Friday, January 22nd). It’s a unique and stunning exhibition that shows the continuity and change in First Nations craft between generations, between those living on the land and those living in the city, and between those using traditional techniques/material and those using new approaches.
There will be some different features at the opening. First, the show smells great. The scent of the smoked moose hide is something that is worth the visit alone. Second, we’ll have a few differences in our opening snacks – enjoy a taste of the trap line as well as smelling and seeing the craft products made on the land.
That’s tonight, Friday, January 22nd from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

01. BOOK REVIEW: Beadwork Techniques of the Native Americas
Written by Scott Sutton
Published by Crazy Crow Trading Post, Pottsboro, Texas 2008
Reviewed by Dee Gibson, SCC Staff
New to the Saskatchewan Craft Council resource library, this how-to book gives step by step instructions on four main styles of Native American beading: loom, two-needle appliqué, Peyote and lazy stitch. Each section includes a several supplemental pages of beautiful full-colour examples. The author includes practical tips on selection of materials, creating your own loom, cutting patterns as well as backing and construction of beaded items such as buckles, barrettes and moccasins. This book focuses mainly on techniques and patterns of American First Nations tribes such as Sioux, Cheyenne, and Northern Plains. The writing style is clear and anecdotal, based on the author’s years of firsthand experience with, and passion for beadwork.
Those readers looking for cultural context or background on the styles and patterns discussed in the book will be disappointed. This is first and foremost a technical guide to the craft of beading and speaks little of the origins of beadwork or its historical and contemporary importance.
Beadwork Techniques of the Native Americas is available for loan to SCC members.

06. HRSDC opens EI Special Benefits to the Self-Employed
In a press release issued just before Christmas, the federal government announced that Royal Assent has been given to the Fairness for the Self-Employed Act.
This is legislation that the cultural sector has been pressing for, for many years. Self-employed Canadians will be able to voluntarily opt into the EI program effective January 31, 2010, in order to take advantage of the EI special benefits. "Special benefits provided to self-employed individuals will mirror those currently available to salaried employees under the EI program."
Regulations are still being written, but the commitment has been made and the option for the self-employed to access a social security net as do employees will soon be in place. "Self employed Canadians who choose to take advantage of EI special benefits will be required to opt into the program at least one year prior to claiming benefits, and will be responsible for making premium payments for the tax year in which they apply to the program. [...] As a transitional measure those who register on or before April 1, 2010, will be able to collect benefits as early as January 1, 2011."
As of January 31, 2010, it will be possible to register with the EI program through the Service Canada website. |
