Saskatchewan Craft Council is pleased to present Stone Notes — an exhibition by Saskatoon artist Robert Assié.

Robert Assié has a formal education in stone carving and sculpture, studying in Weymouth, England and then under master Claude Chevènement in France at Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye. Assié brings this technical knowledge to his work using native Saskatchewan stone.

Assié’s practice involves carving on an ambitious scale, and acquiring material is a significant and important part of his process. Procuring local Saskatchewan field “marble” requires, as Assié describes: “… [an] in-depth understanding of stone, specific knowledge of local stones, as well as community help to locate and move the monoliths.” Assié’s commitment to obtaining local stone rather than ordering quarried stone creates a meaningful dialogue between artist and material. Assié encounters the existing patina on the stone’s surface and lets it inform the composition and final sculptural work.

Meet the artist, Robert Assié, at a Reception on Saturday, November 30 from 2 to 5 pm at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery. Everyone is welcome!

Stone Notes is on view in the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery from November 23, 2019 to January 4, 2020.
