Jenni Haikonen

Jenni Haikonen is a botanical artist working within Saskatoon, SK. She creates original art pieces, prints and stationery using both watercolour and acrylic paint as a medium. Her work reflects the natural and wild landscapes of the prairies, with a focus on native prairie plants. Each piece is created around a theme of preservation and conservation. Because of this, locally sourced and found materials are used as much as possible. She also hold a fascination with historical folk practices surrounding plants and hopes to share the beauty of these findings with others.

Her work can be found at the SCC boutique or on her website.

What is your inspiration

I am inspired by the natural world, the plants that grow in the wild landscapes, and the history of botanical painting beginning with the women artists of the Victorian Era.

How would you describe what craft is?

Craft is a dedication to creating excellence within a medium. In a world that is moving forward in the digital realm and beyond, Craft is rooted in practices that are tactile and have been developed by those long before us. As a community it keeps us grounded to the things that are meaningful and long-worked with human hands.

What would you like clients to know?

My work is slow and thoughtful. It can be viewed as a poem- not something to be worked out, but something to luxuriate in and experience the sensations of all that it evokes. My hope is that sensations experienced include peace, nostalgia, and restfulness.
