Ruth Langwieser

Ruth Langwieser is a Swiss-Canadian artist based in Estevan on Treaty 4 territory in Saskatchewan. She studied ceramics in Geneva, Switzerland, and mainly works with stoneware and porcelain clay to which she integrates natural and artificial light sources. What draws her to this material is the lengthy geological journey it has undergone before she takes it through her own transformative process. As a relative newcomer to the Canadian prairies, the polar landscape of the long winter with its crystalized atmosphere has compelled her to incorporate brightly coloured glazes into her white porcelain pieces.

Since her move to Canada, the change of climate has influenced the direction of her work. She started to introduce recycled plastic materials into her installations and focusses on interactions between human-made elements and natural forces.
