IMG_0307In one sentence describe the piece you are submitting to Emma Bound.

1998 Emma Lake Collaboration t-shirt wrapped with Greg-made copper wire.

Tell us about your creative process – in general and/or specifically for your Emma Bound piece.

I raise / hammer copper and call myself a metalsmith. I decided to do this piece because it was my first idea for this project. A bound Emma relic. Fits the theme I think.

What currently inspires you and which other artists do you admire and why?Greg-Wilbur_QueenEmmaBound

My own imagination inspires me the most. Trying to take my medium into new or newish realms is a goal.

I consider Michael Hosaulk a genius of relational aesthetics, I’ve learned much from him.

Sculptor Michael Peterson is my favorite living maker.

Pablo Picasso is my favorite maker of all time…Those cave painters in France are in there too. And others and nature and much.

Where are you from and what do you love and/or hate about that place?

I live in Portland, Oregon USA. I love living here and consider myself very lucky to have been born, raised and living here in Oregon. To live in the western world is an amazing gift and as far as I can gather, very lucky. Maybe too easily taking it for granted. I live like a King.

Tell us if this is your first time or 10th time attending Emma International Collaboration. What are you looking forward to?

I have been blessed with the gift of many Emmas. I have come to every Emma Collaboration event since 1998. To date, I have done 23 collaboration events around the world; and have helped start an Oregon one called Frogwood.  They have all been huge in my life.

I look forward seeing old friends and meeting possible new ones…. Oh,  And making stuff. BIG FUN.

What does “making collaborative art work” mean to you? Is it a struggle to “let go” at times?

I’ve hopefully learned to collaborate up a storm. It is usually not hard for me to “let go” when making with others. If other collab partners have strong ideas I usually go with it, or at least try to make the idea work.  Lessons in relational asthetics abound, and are really what these events are about. Sometimes art happens was well.

Perspective ViewIn one sentence describe the piece you are submitting to Emma Bound.

This piece is a francophone’s translation of being bound to EMMA.

Tell us about your creative process – in general and/or specifically for your Emma Bound piece.

In making sculptural pieces, I look to step away from my habitual furniture building procedures, to create work that evolves from a vague concept which takes form as the bulding process evolves.

For my Emma Bound piece, I wanted to have interlocking legs, which required some furniture building methodology ; the rest just shaped itself.

What currently inspires you and which other artists do you admire and why?

I am inspired by natural forms, especially bone structures, and artists such as Henri Moore, Wendell Castel and Jamie Russell.

Where are you from and what do you love and/or hate about that place?Front view

I am from Saskatoon, although I’ve been in Montreal for over 10 years. Montreal has a high concentration of creative minds, leading to high levels of energy and anxiety. Saskatoon is full of space to be creative, to build community or to isolate yourself.

Tell us if this is your first time or 10th time attending Emma International Collaboration. What are you looking forward to?

This is my 3rd Emma Collaboration. I look forward to seeing familiar faces and places, and getting my hands on weird and creative objects.

Plan viewWhat does “making collaborative art work” mean to you? Is it a struggle to “let go” at times?

It is so very relieving and motivating to create the way we do at Emma. No egos, no rules, no plans, just exchanging, creating and learning form one another. Its the ideal way to work and play.

My lifelong hobby as a Metal Customizing Machinist has extended from large scale metal work to the small scale realm of jewellery making, inspired by plasma cutting remnants and working in collaboration with Melody Armstrong’s direction.
