I was trained in Romania in figurative art and traditional techniques, working predominantly with wood, stone, and bronze. Since arriving in Canada in 2012, I have adapted my working methods, primarily expressing myself with found and everyday materials. This transition has posed many challenges and opportunities; increasingly, referencing my diasporic identity, often working with memories and experiences specific to my life in Romania. Guided by an intuitive connection to found materials, my technical skills and a sense of discovery lead me to sculptural form and a conceptual framework. Like an actor learning a new role, I allow myself to respond to the everyday materials and situations that surround me. Experimenting with a range of found objects, and building on the associations embedded in their physical presence and symbolic potential, I gain more confidence and enthusiasm for how memory, my diasporic identity, and current realities are integrated into a sculptural language in evolution.
