Garnet Hall

I was born in Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm near Stoughton. I spent 10 years on Vancouver Island before I returned to my family’s farm in 1980. I started woodworking to supplement our income. I was a member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council in the ’80s and ’90s and am happy to be back. In the past I’ve attended WinterGreen Fine Craft Market, Saskatchewan Handcraft Festival, Bazaart, and the Winnipeg Christmas Craft Sale.

How do you define craft?

Craft is the meeting of mind, heart, and hands to create functional and artisinal items for people to enjoy and use. I think craft should reflect the environment and community where it is created.

What inspires you?

Landscape.

I can’t wait sometimes to see a sketch or idea come to life in a finished project, thus resulting in many late nights in the shop.

What else would you like to share about your work?

I try to create my work and live my life as environmentally sustainable as possible. I have a solar installation that provides all the power for our home and my shop. I plant trees every year to replace what I use and sequester carbon.
