Norm Lepage
he/his
Norm Lepage is a Saskatchewan-based woodcarver and the artist behind Wood Geek Studio, where fine craftsmanship, curiosity, and contemporary design come together. Working primarily with hardwoods such as cherry and poplar, Lepage creates sculptural relief carvings that transform wood into expressive surfaces defined by movement, rhythm, and light. His practice bridges traditional woodworking techniques with a modern sculptural sensibility, resulting in work that feels both grounded and innovative.
Lepage’s signature body of work, Groove Theory, is an ongoing collection of hand-carved reliefs that explore intuitive geometry and the natural patterns found in the world around us. Drawing inspiration from flowing water, wind-shaped dunes, cloud formations, and the layered textures of forests, each piece is carefully carved to echo organic motion. While the forms are abstract, they remain deeply familiar, inviting viewers to recognize nature’s rhythms translated into wood.
A defining element of Groove Theory is its dynamic relationship with light. As daylight changes or gallery spotlights shift, the carved grooves catch and cast shadows that move across the surface. This interaction brings the work to life, revealing new depths, angles, and contrasts over time. No two moments of viewing are quite the same.
Rooted in patience, process, and respect for material, Lepage’s work emphasizes presence and subtlety. The carvings do not simply occupy space — they respond to it. Through Groove Theory, Norm Lepage invites viewers to slow down, engage with texture and form, and experience the quiet, evolving energy of wood shaped by hand.
