Roxanne Brown
she/her
Roxanne Brown is a jewellery artist and metalsmith based in Regina, Saskatchewan. Her work ranges from traditional to modern through to industrial designs. She focuses on unique, handmade one-of-a-kind jewellery. Roxanne designs and creates original pieces through combining sterling silver, argentium, fine silver, copper, and brass. She is inspired by the visual and tactile interplay of light and touch created through combining these metals with a range of texturing techniques, vitreous glass enamels, patinas, semi-precious stones, and high-quality handmade art glass beads.
After taking Jewellery 1 & 2 classes from the Neil Balkwill Centre in Regina, Roxanne opened her own studio space in 2013 to keep exploring her creativity. She still continues to take new and interesting classes to develop her skills.
Roxanne creates jewellery for women and men and her creations come together under the label of Roxanne Brown Jewellery. She sells her work through her website, as well as at a few shows throughout the year. Roxanne creates work not only for her website and show events but also does a great deal of custom work for clients as well.
Over the past 3 1/2 years, Roxanne has also been making tree ornaments and jewellery collections to help raise funds for a variety of causes. She raised money for the Regina Food Bank in 2020 and 2021, the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal in 2022, and the Canadian Ukraine Foundation in 2023 (both in support of the war in Ukraine). 40% of all sales from her “Fight On” jewellery collection has been donated monthly for Ukraine relief.
Roxanne’s past shows include the Jewellery Artist Guild of Regina shows, Cathedral Village Arts Festival in Regina, Mid-Summer Arts Festival in Fort Qu’Appelle, Regina Folk Festival, Sunflower Festival in Yorkton, SunDog in Saskatoon, JewelleryWon Shows, and the Regina Exhibition Fashion Week.
How do you define craft?
Today we can find craft and art nearly everywhere, from a mural on the side of a building, a statue in your neighbour’s front yard, to that new piece of handmade jewellery that your friend bought. There is no end to what humanity can create for the enjoyment of others.
Craft and art help to make our world a brighter place. Anytime a piece of art can make a person smile, the work has achieved it’s purpose.
I make my jewellery for my own love of creating and for the enjoyment of my client. My biggest joy is the look on a client’s face when they see their final piece. There have been as many tears as smiles.
What inspires you?
Our family has always been into art of one kind or another, working with our hands. Whether it was knitting, woodworking, painting, or creating delicate needlework, we all had a need to create. I love the slow method of silversmithing and creating things one piece at a time. There are design ideas everywhere you look, even in the simple wrapping paper a bouquet of flowers came home in.
Where did you learn your medium?
I took a couple of silversmithing classes at the Neil Balkwill Centre in 2011 and fell in love with the work. This was followed by more classes. I opened my own studio in 2013 and continue to take classes as they come up and pique my interest.
