A few years ago, I was helping my father gather inventory for his antique store – we were treasure hunting on the Canadian Prairies!! As we traversed flea markets, yard sales, estate sales, auction sales, and dusty barns we found gorgeous pieces of china from days gone by. I was drawn to the beautiful patterns on these nostalgic pieces of our cultural history. However, something became very clear to me – for as beautiful and valuable as the antique and vintage dishes were – no one wanted them! These dishes were once a source of pride – revered by families. . . .how many events had these dishes been a part of? How many families gathered for food made by grandmothers? How many Thanksgivings, Christmas’s, weddings, funerals, Sunday dinners had these dishes been privy to? I saw stories and beauty in the china. It was troubling that others did not – that gorgeous plates, teacups & bowls were gathering dust in cardboard boxes tucked into corner basements. I set out determined to make people love these dishes once again!
It took a year and a half of trial and error to develop my own technique for creating broken china jewelry. This was a time filled with many failures, many experiments and plenty of frustration. I evolved and over this time, created my own beautifully broken technique. Turns out – I love smashing, shaping, transforming these unwanted and discarded items – breathing new life into the old! I am passionate about upcycling these dusty neglected pieces and having people absolutely love them again! Once I had mastered my technique – I was overwhelmed by custom orders from my clients!! I am honored to create timeless pieces from their loved ones dishes that they can wear close to their hearts. My pieces are more than jewelry – they are memory filled symbols that honor our heritage
