Kristi West

she/her

Kristi is the owner of The Otter Side, a small business that creates handmade leather goods. Her products exude a minimalistic style whilst incorporating beauty, durability and functionality. Her dream of owning a ‘funky old house’ and to ‘craft all day’ is fulfilled by this small business. Completing the dream is her black lab Otter, who is always by her side.

How would you describe what craft is?

Craft is a strong urge to create. It is important because it allows all of us to use our hands and be intimate with a vision that is entirely unique to our own selves. Craft allows another outlet for us to share our magnificent selves with our community.

Where did you learn your craft?

I am self-taught leatherworker. It began as a hobby, as I have always enjoyed creating by hand, but somehow this one has stuck. I have learned so much about this craft in the past 6 years.

What inspires you?

I am always inspired by other artisans. Also, I derive inspiration from the people who stop to see my work and make requests or offer suggestions. Mostly I am inspired by creating in this medium – it calls to me!
