Shane Junop

Shane Junop is an emerging stone artist based in Saskatoon, SK. In Saskatchewan he explores the prairie landscapes finding form and beauty in the layers and textures found in the natural stone. The geology of this medium captivates him and the make-up of the surrounding landscape mirrors the stones collected, each a unique prairie fieldstone. The inspiration to carve each stone is a distinct process and he strives to create a meaningful dialogue between himself and the local stone. The inspiration begins on the prairie where he comes upon a stone that resonates beyond its’ surface appearance. Usually, this results in a spontaneous rough sketch on the stone where the process of transformation develops into an expressive finished piece of artwork in his Saskatoon studio. Shane carves directly into the stone; he intuitively makes strong lines and graceful curves that develop into figurative and abstract carvings.
