Rooted
Handmade House
Exhibition Dates: March 25, 2022 - May 14, 2022
“Rooted: 50 years of Saskatchewan Craft” is an exhibition highlighting the history and legacy of Handmade House. This artist cooperative has had a tradition of quality Saskatchewan craft since the early 1970’s and currently represents over 100 artisans. The beginning was tentative with the first venture being a Christmas shop initiated by five women who recognized the importance of making Saskatchewan craft accessible. Over the years the store has become a full-time operation, added a diversity of craft and makers and has moved several times – in the Broadway area since 1986.
This exhibition features both past and present working members who have been responsible for the day-to-day operations of Handmade House. The exhibition pieces are provided by the artisans themselves, collected works from the community and special works on loan from both SK Arts permanent collection and Gabriel Dumont Institute. The exhibition has a diversity of craft: ceramics, fibre, glass, jewellery, painting, papermaking, printmaking and woodworking. The exhibition has been curated in a partnership between the Exhibitions Coordinators of Saskatchewan Craft Council and Handmade House.
