Featured Art Installation
Like a Rolling Stone – Habitat
Step into the landscape and make it your own
Created by Saskatchewan fibre artist and longtime Saskatchewan Craft Council member Heike Fink, Like a Rolling Stone – Habitat is an interactive fibre art installation designed to be explored, touched, and re-imagined. Thousands of hand-felted pebbles create an ever-changing riverscape, inviting you to move, stack, roll, rearrange, and create. Build landscapes, discover patterns, or tell your own story through the stones. This hands-on installation offers a playful glimpse into Fink’s larger exhibition Like a Rolling Stone – Habitat currently on view at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery at 813 Broadway Avenue in Saskatoon!

stART Feature Artist
Nancy Bird
Presented by the Saskatchewan Craft Council
stART is a special display at Art Now that features emerging artists, those in the early stages of their career, as chosen by exhibiting galleries. Discover a new up-and-coming favourite and support the next generation of artists!
Nancy Bird is a self-taught weaver living in rural Saskatchewan. Bird draws inspiration from the rhythms, colours, and landscapes of prairie life. While managing a large animal veterinary practice on the family farm and raising cattle, she began experimenting with natural dyeing using garden flowers and natural three-ply wool sourced from MacAusland’s Woollen Mills in Prince Edward Island. Working with a slow cooker and successive dye baths, she discovered a rich palette of vibrant colours and subtle gradations that harmonized beautifully together.
This exploration fostered a deeper connection to the natural world and inspired her to pursue the art of weaving wool rugs. An existing farm building was transformed into a weaving studio and greenhouse, creating a dedicated space for her craft. There, she works on a Saskatchewan-built floor loom crafted by Ward’s Woodworking—a sturdy, quiet, 45-inch, four-harness counterbalance loom with a weighted overhead beater, ideally suited for weaving weft-faced rugs.
Retirement provided the opportunity to fully embrace her long-held goal of weaving. Although rug weaving is a slow and deliberate process, she relishes the time spent designing directly on the loom, creating patterns that reflect her rural lifestyle, agricultural roots, and appreciation for the beauty found in everyday prairie landscapes. Her work celebrates the connection between handcraft, natural materials, and the enduring character of rural Saskatchewan.
